Hi Guys!
I took my truck to Ford and they said that they ran a bunch of tests and pulled the valve covers so that they could check for anything out of the ordinary. Ford said that they think it is a normal sound and that I should just keep driving it unless it starts getting worse and then I should bring it back.
So thats what I am going to do I guess. I might try some other synthetic oils to see if they will help quite it down a little bit more.
Thanks for all the input.

I will use the heater when I can but when you go to the store and it sits for a few hours it will still make the noise and plugging it in isn't an option.

But before I can plug it in I have to fix the exstension cord. Mans best friend decided that it would be a great idea to chew through it. Ha!!
If it is not one thing its another.

Be safe

I would wonder why they pulled the valve covers and ran tests on the engine if it is "just a normal sound" .....

It does suck here too having no way to plug it in while at work. Otherwise, I always have it plugged in at home when it is going to below 40. Only other thing I would think of is switch to a lightweight oil in the winter....just have to watch how hard you run it. The lighter oil will break down quicker.

Ya, I am going to try some different oils and see if that will help.
Rght now I changed the oil and put in 5w40 synthetic. It seems to help a little but not that much.
My friend runs Amsoil in his truck and he gave me some info to read regarding the specs for the oil. I might try some of that and see how it does.
The Tech said to try some 10w30 when I am due for an oil change again to see if that will make a difference.

Colo79Ford you are right it does make you wonder but this is what they told me.
The tech said that they changed the oil pressure to the injectors to make sure the enjectors were working properly and to see if it made the noise change or go away. Then they put it on a power balance tester (I don't know the name of it.)to make sure all the cylinders were in the normal range and he sad that they were.
Ford told the Tech to check something in the top of the head to see if there was any sign of wear. I guess they have had some that were noisy and they had some sign of wear in the top of the head. They said that mine looked good and didn't have any metal shavings or anything like that.
It has been a really frustrating process but I have to take their word for it I guess. I can't keep paying Ford $100 bucks to hear everything is fine, that is really getting old.

Hi All,
It has been a while since I have visited but I thought I would let everyone know what the knocking was.
After hauling a load of hay on a very hot day the antifreeze boiled out of the resivor and the cooling fan ran constantly.
I thought maybe it was just because it was so hot out but I was not sure.
About 3 weeks later I was hauling a bunch of cows and it did the same thing on a much cooler day.
Running empty on the way home that same day the cooling fan kept coming on as well.
I took it to Ford a few days later and had them look at it.
Ford took the heads off and found that the head gasket had been failing and leaking small amounts of coolant into one of the pistons and that was what was making the knocking sound.
This had been going on for so long that it burned up the piston and the piston wall.
Ford put a new motor in the truck and it has been running better than when I first bought it.
A new 6.0 for 100 bucks. That was a pretty good deal I think.
Thanks for all the advice.
Be safe.

Colo79Ford that was so harsh!! But pretty funny too!
I know the 6.0 has not been the best psd that Ford has put in their trucks but I really like the one I have.
It is a bigger truck with lower gears and gets better milieage than my 3/4 ton 7.3 used to.
I have a 6.4 for a work truck and it is pretty nice expect for the emisions crap that it does. Plus the mileage is not that great on it.
So to sumerize I have ran diesels from the old 6.9 to the new 6.4 and they are all (despite their problems) work horses!!

I also watched the video of your truck on Utube and that was pretty sweet!
That always makes me smile to see a truck spank one of thos Euro cars. I hate those cars.

Dang!!! I would like to get a new engine for $100.

As for the emmisions caca....Find a friend in Elbert County and claim his address as yours. Non-emissions county and it is the lowest taxed county in the state. Renewals are super cheap.
