Frame differences between 4x4/4x2?

I'm looking to pick up a frame donor for my '82 F-150 rebuild I've got going, but just wan't to make sure it will work. The donor is an '85 4x2, while mine is an '82 4x4. It wouldn't make sense for there to be frame differences, but I just want to make sure. Also, were there more than 1 option for short bed stylesides? 1 or 2 tanks, slightly different sizes, or just anything I should be aware of? Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it!

All the frames from 80-96 are *basically* the same. The only real difference is the style in which the bumper mounts on early trucks vs. later trucks (91+)

awesome, thats what I thought. I figured if there was a major difference, LMC would distinguish that in their catalogs. I'm just curious because my '82 sits extremely high compared to the 4x2 models, and I'm trying to figure out why. Its not lifted, and only has 31's on it, so I don't really know.

it's just the design of the axle and all. a 4x4 sits about 4" higher than a 4x2.

so by converting my 4x4 drivetrain and axles to the 4x2 frame, all should be well?

If you look, you should see factory blocks under the rear springs on a 4x4. That accounts for some of the difference.

I can't look, but I'll take your word for it My babies 3000 miles away sitting in the snow right now. The donor I found is a nice desert rig, so I'm jumping all over it now that I know things are good. Any Idea about different shortbed styleside versions, or is 85.5" the only one?

in this body style there's only the 8' long bed and 6 1/2 foot short bed. i think it's actually 6'8" but there are only two, long and short.

The beds themselves could have 1 or 2 fill holes depending on in you have 1 or 2 tanks and beds for different years have different numbers of bed mounting holes. The holes in the bed will line up with holes in your frame, it's just a matter of some beds got fewer holes than others.

so if you were to find a 2 tank short bed, you could technically fill in one of those holes if you wanted to retain a 1 tank system, and it would still be the same size as a normal 1 tank bed? I suppose that is the worst of my problems if this truck is a 2 tank system then. I can deal with that. Thanks for the help Justin

either fill the hole in or swap in a second tank. 2 tanks are always handy. the other thing it gives you the option to do is like this:
A stock shortbed tank is 16 gallons, but the rear tank would be 20. if you want to keep one tank but want more capacity, swap in a rear tank, get rid of the front tank, and then fill in the hole on the bed.

It's easier to graft over a filler hole than to graft in a filler hole- 2 just gives you more options.

Thats a damn good idea. i never liked being able to get 130 miles out of a tank, especially when the fuel gauge doesn't work Used to run out of fuel all the time. It's only a 1 tank bed though, which is awesome. However, I will probably consider running dual tanks, and trying to figure out a way to route the filler hose to both tanks. Any ideas on how I would do that?

no chance. the bronco tank hangs as low as the factory spare. toss a tire under there and you'd have 2" of ground clearance.
