Need help diagnosing...

My 2005 Excursion has just recently started giving me trouble,
after 60K reliable miles.

When I accelerate as the RPM hits 2200 RPM (almost exactly) the
motor begins rythmically "cutting out" and the vehicle slows.

If I try to increase throttle, it bucks, again in a very rythmically,
and if I persist trying to speed up, whitish smoke starts pulsing out
the exhaust.

If I back off the throttle and then re-apply, the motor pulls and runs
OK, up to the 2000-2200 rpm again, then goes back to the cycle.

I have been able (of neccessity, in traffic!) to repeat this until smoothly
driving 55+ mph in high gear with the rpms lower than 1900, and it
seems like nothing is wrong at that point.

The motor does NOT do this when completely cold. Just as soon as the water temp climbs up a bit the motor acts up again, and gets worse
as it gets to normal operating temp.

I have no modifications or tuners, and did the oil/air/fuel filters just a
few hundred miles ago at 60K, no problems until now.

I am going to take my truck in to the dealer ASAP, but wanted to have
some idea what is happening first...

Thanks in advance!

John

there are a bunch of posts in here about that and the reasons are varied. Did you try doing a search? Since its under warranty I would let the dealer deal with and just get a solid explanation.

sounds similer to what I had. Your not running a tuner are ya? I didn't see one on you, But my truck did the same thing. Not as notisable w/o the tuner but still there. After replacing the icp and pigtail and finding it wasn't it I tried the ipr and that was it.

Well it could be a fuel injector. Ours will act up like that and It usually meens an injector. Most times we can change the oil and it will clear up, but sometimes we have to replace one or two. We have an 06 f350 with 270k. The white smoke you talked about could be the turbo but not sure. If you still have warrenty take it to the dealer. Hope its one you trust so they don't stick it to you. Good Luck

Thanks for the input guys.

No problems starting, at all!

Before I posted the above I searched here
and other places, which led me to try disconnecting
the EGR and driving around. No change.

Since I figured out not to try and keep my foot "in it"
when it acts up, I have seen no more smoke.

The motor simply cuts out at 1900-2200 RPM, I
ease up a bit and then hold the RPM just below
that and the truck drives...

Oh, and yes I plan on having the dealer fix it under warranty,
whatever it is, but my dealer I like has a 1-2 week wait to
come in for diesel repairs right now.

If anyone knows a good dealer in Orange/riverside/sandiego
county California, I am open to trying a new place even though
I have been happy at Villa...

John

smell your white smoke next time you drive it, Im betting it smells like diesel, white smoke is usually from coolant or unburnt diesel. in your case im betting its the ipr. You might get a couple of shrugs from the dealership if this is your problem cause the dealership couldn't figure out mine when they tried to analize it.

I use El Cajon Ford, 619-579-8888 ask for Jake in service (good service writer) and if you get work done there, insist that Kevin be the tech doing the job. He's the best diesel tech on the west coast, no joke...

The smoke IS unburned diesel, smells strongly of it, and my

coolant level is *spot* on.

I would love to go to the El Cajon dealer, but for now am
most likely going to go to the one in San Juan Capistrano,
they claim they have the best diesel tech in the county,
and only a 48 hour turn-around for a diagnostic.

Thanks!
