Hey guys, I had the driver side front wheel off to do some other work, and realized the seal between the axle tube and the axleshaft had come loose. How big of a deal is this as long as I don't engage 4wd? I mean can I drive with it like this until its convenient to fix it, or am I risking damage to myself or my font axle by driving with it in its current condition?
Am i right that fixing this/replacing this seal will involve pulling the wheel, hub, stub shaft, knuckle, and possibly front axle shaft (if replacement is needed)?
if there is no oil leaking out, then it should be ok to drive until it is convient to fix. If it is wet, just keep the oil topped off and fix at your earliest convience. If Im not mistaken, that is a dust seal, not an oil seal. Someone else more knowledgeable should chime in. Aaron

with that seal being bad it allows dirt and water into the axle tube,so I would get it fixed asap.everything you mentioned has to come apart except the knuckle, your also going to want to replace the larger knuckle seal.
I've said it on other threads, and I will say it here. After doing my ball joints and seeing how this particular dust seal is designed to work, I have added it to my "points to be lubricated". It's not surprising these seals get all torn up.
I just replaced these seals on my truck about a month ago. It was a pain in the ***. And now I as well lubricate those seals like KelVarnson mentioned, and I make sure to engage my axles every now and then just to make sure those seals stay loose and the surface they run against dosen't corrode and tear up the seal.

Speaking of "points to be lubricated", when I bought my truck two months ago I saw a monthly checklist of things to check/lub. I've since looked everywhere but can't find it. Does someone have a chart of some sort that will list these items? I've been checking the obvious but sans a checklist I don't want to forget anything.
[I have the mileage-based checklists but nothing for the 30-day checklist.]
TIA.
Later... Brewster...
