was driving home from work the other day, stopped to gas up, started up and drove down the rode about 2 miles before i heard a knocking, still running but no power, then it died. i was able to pull off on the side of the road. cranked it up, nothing. cranked again nothing. thought it might be flooded after the crank so wasted some time and got under the hood. checked the carb to make sure gas was coming in, to make sure the fuel filter wasn't clogged, and there was gas. but when i would pull on the carb a mist almost like smoke would come out. so i sat a bit, cranked it up again, wouldn't fire. just didn't even sound like it wanted to fire. finally after a dozen tries the battery was dead so a got a tow home, recharged the battery after a day, and it started right up. ran like nothing had happened.
now i'm wondering if my gas line is getting heated up somewhere, or if that is even a problem. i'm stumped as to the mist coming from the carb and i have never had a problem before. obvisouly it is gas related, it wouldn't make sense that the filter was clogged and now it's not. any ideas or help would be appreciated. thanks, it's an 80 f-150 ranger, 400cui
The mist coming out of the carb is normal. Every time you hit the throttle, the pump in the carb shoots gas down into the engine.
Since it sounds like you had fuel, you must have not had spark. A heat related failure that occurs with the ignition is the ignition module. It will get hot and fail. It's located on the inner fender on the passenger side under the hood.
