I have a 01 f250sd v10 i am going to change the rear diff transmission and transfer case fluid this weekend. I am wanting to use royal purple fluid for all ot these and just wanted to be sure on the weights, and if the royal purple atf is comparable to mercon. Any info is helpful, thanks.
I'm no royal purple expert, but I will relate what happened to me.
I decided to change the rear gear oil because it had been a few years, and I did immerse the unit in 2 feet of water
So, I used Royal Purple, it was all my parts supplier could get in 75W140.
Some back story: My truck, from brand new, would whine slightly when in 4x4 on the highway (rain or snow). The rear gears would sing every so slightly. Nothing to worry about, but I did hear it, and it never got worse.
Changed to Royal Purple, and it was still there. A little quieter, but still there.
I was in a rush, and the RTV leaked fluid, so I went out and got Mobil 1 75W140, and redid the whole thing again.
No whine. Nothing. Been in there for another 10K miles so far (including pulling 2ft diameter trees through the woods in Upstate NY) and no noise.
