quick question i have a 289 i am working on with a DSII dizzy on it and i am wondering what was the best factory ignition box made. i have a GM HEI w/ heatsink setup, a Duraspark II, and a Chrysler ignition box. now i have no preference for brand i want best overall performance out of it i don't care how to wire it up its all the same to me. its for a DD car btw and the reasons for your choice also thanks in advance
Of course the coil-on-plug and the coil pack ignitions are the best. But unless you want to heavily modify your ignition system and wiring, that won't happen.
I believe the MSD 6a would be the next best option that would work for your application. It's a multiple spark system at low rpm to help completely burn the air/fuel mixture, and it's a cd system, which raises the primary voltage on the coil rather than having 12 volts or lower like a factory electronic ignition. The MSD 6a will work with your dSII dist if you happen to already have it curved for your engine.
As far as the factory ignitions go, there doesn't seem to be much difference. The only problem with the Ford dist's is they are hard to recurve for timing, since the advance weights and springs are down underneath the dist plate, and require some disassembly to experiment with.
i know all that i mean the ignition boxes, sorry for the confusion. i just want something that will give a good spark and that i can replace easily on the road if need be. just wondering what the diff in perf would be between a 4 pin hei, a DSII, or a Chryco box. and the thing is, it doesn't matter cause my DSII distributor had the connector cut off so thats why i don't care about the wiring
