</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
Any time i changed inner axles for my old 44 i would actually look for the ones out of the older closed knuckle 44 cuse the part of the axle where the shaft meets the splines on later years has a tapered narrow section. Only thing with those axles on the later year 44 with discs was to grind the u joint clips off and tack weld them in places as well as grind the excess threads on the balljoint for clearance issues as the axle rotates. done this for years and found its the strongest way to do it if you run big tires. So look for another set of closed knuckle axles or spend a pretty penny for aftermarket axles...I would just invest in a dana 60 front i got mine for 500$ cnd at a recker ( i know smokin deal) and it was a 79 version with kingpins!
Try Randy's Ring and Pinion. I bought a set of Dana 44 front outer axle shafts for my 79 F150. While it is not a closed knuckle, the guys there seemed really to know what is available.
Those closed knuckles use a 5-86x u joint and that doesnt seem to be very common. I think its a fairly big joint but the outers are only 19 spline. It would be trick if they made something bigger then that so you dont have to swap the axle out to get some added strength.
yeah a 79 dana 60 will bolt right in. My truck is a 73 and i had no problems whatsoever. The measurement from center to center pin holes on axle was 35 1/2 if i remember correctly. Its hard to find a 60 that is the good one with king pins and disc brakes though the ones to look for are 77 1/2 -79. I thought i could fab up and make one work from the 80's and newer but the spring mount pin would sit right on the the pot if u were to relocate it. So theres really only 2 1/2 years they made the good axles and with the king pins you got the option to run cross over steering like i did which is one of the best mods i did to my truck!!! good luck
