-10 with no heat??

I have an 03 w/47k miles on it. It starts fine but blows old air, then starts to over heat. I get a check engine light when the temp hits 3/4 up on the dash guage. I had thought it was the thermostat and had it replaced still dose it. after you run the truck for a long while the heater starts working. Like something thaws out? My be an ice plug somewhere???

I think I might change out the coolent / anti-freeze. unless I get better input from here. thanks.

water pump. there has been known to have sand left over in the engine from the castings and they chew up the water pump blades and plug up the oil/egr coolers. get a new water pump and get a coolant filter kit on it right away!

if the fins are damaged on the water pump you have poor circulation. the water to the heater core dosent get new hot water so it blows cold and the hot water stayes in the motor so it cooks and overheats.

This problem only happends in the -10 and below range. Otherwise the truck runs great.

The purple haired chick with the knockers got you covered. If you leave it as is it will bite your az in spring/summer when it warms up and the truck is under load.

I would have to disagree and say that something is freezing up. If the waterpump was losing efficiency, that problem would show up at higher OAT.

The coolant flow is low becuase the sand leftover from casting wore out the pump impeller is my guess. The coolant is taking a long time to circulate and causes the no heat in the cab and overheat in the motor. When you drive for a while the hot coolant finally makes it to the heater core.Pull the pump and see if it looks sand blasted. If coolant was freezing up something would quickly break when the system pressure hit the blockage.

Nope, the engine does not create enough heat for cold weather so if it dips below zero I block the radiator. 25 degrees it is fine and does not require blocking.

are you running a water temp gauge? I don't have one but was wondering how much the water temps get effected in cold weather. as cold as its been up here I never have a prob with heat, and all I have on the front of the truck is the crome inserts between the grill. Dosen't seem to block too much, not like the blankets you can get for the grills.

No after market, just what is on the dash. If I pull up to a stop light my heater will go cold. When the outside air is warmer no problem, your inserts are probably just enough to block the radiator. I just block mine like I do my tractor in extreme cold weather, diesels run very cold unlike gas engines. 2004 engines have a bigger water pump and the only posts about blowing cold air seem to be us 2003 owners.
