Burping noise

When my 04 SD is on the extream race tune, I am getting a burping noise coming from what appears to be the lower portion of the engine. It is not the air filter when lifting off the throttle, it is when the truck is under load (hard acceleration). I returned back to stock and hammered the truck. Could not recreate the noise. Any comments or similar experiences ?

Sounds like "turbo fart", which by all accounts is normal when lifting your foot off the accelerator after hard accel. I hate the sound, but Ford says its normal, my truck started doing it after my first flash at 15K miles.

Do you see any black smoke coming from the tailpipe when you get these hiccups?

I had the same problem especially under load and after a little figuring found out the fins on the exhaust side of the turbo had desinigrated. still had boost and everything. soon as I put a new turbo on it worked perfect!

Denman81, you sure sound calm about that. How do you disintigrate the exhaust fins? FOD would take out the intake side of the fins first. What leaves the intake side and takes out the exhaust side of the fan? rc

Oh calm was what I was not when the dealership told me this. They found this out right away and had the turbo the next day but kept my truck for 3 WEEKS because they couldn't tell why it had happened. Then closest thing that they could come up with was either too much carbon had acumulated on one of the blades and took out a chunk at high rpms which then took out the rest of the fins, OR there could have just been a hair crack from the factory in one of the fins and it finally let loose and bounced around the housing like a ping pall ball
They got me the new turbo and shes been fine for almost 20k now.

I have been towing my trailer this week but today I will set the SCT to "gittyup" and see what happens.

Yes it does blow a little black smoke when the burping occurs. It's pretty loud and sounds like it is coming from the turbo area.

Maybe turbo stick. But it does not seem to lose power. Again it only occurs when the truck is in extream race tune not on stock.

I can't take it to the dealer since I would have to return the truck back to stock and it does not make the noise when in stock mode.

I was talking with ID and they said my turbo may need cleaning. I have 60K on the truck and it is showing signs of oil residue in the intake and turbo tube. I am planning on doing the CCV bypass anyway. Could the turbo be hanging up when the Race tune is asking it to spin at the rate needed for extra boost ? Is the turbo cleaning a major project ?
