Smile Winter Mileage!!

Typically mileage in the winter is terrible, but I just made a trip over to ID and back and must say the X is an amazing traveling machine. On the way over I had terrible winds and was pushing the speed pretty hard, but still managed 15.5. On the way back however I was amazed!! Didnt have the nasty wind, had the cruise on 82. 654 miles on the tank and put 36.7 gallons in to fill her up. That works out to 17.8!!

Normally I would say that 17.8 was OK for highway, but this was driving thru MT and N. ID on I-90 crossing 4 mountain passes so it wasnt just a straight and level drive. My average speed worked out to 80 mph (600 miles in 7.5 hours) so I was pushing it pretty good thru the passes. (the first 50 miles on the tank were in town)

It was nice to have an outfit that I was able to drive all the way home w/o stopping for anything. I figured I was going to top it off somewhere along the way, but I got home w/ a qtr tank!

Gotta love a Diesel X!!!

Marc,

Wind BLOWS both ways!

You've got one of the best diesels out there...that 7.3L is a bullet proof motor that also returns great unloaded mpg's!...I was sadened to see her go!

But in today's 'quest' for smaller motors with HIGHER outputs...well we're finding it harder and harder to find ANY motors that get these mpgs!

The new 6.4L struggles to get 7's while pulling trailers...hardly something to brag about...but all those ponies and torque and emission controls COME AT A PRICE!

Hold on to that 7.3 as long as you can...if I could have found a good one at a reasonable price for 'me' locally when I was looking that would have been in my garage in a minute!...sadly there were numerous 6.0L Ex's around here all for $10K MORE...I wasn't interested in a 6.0L and not for $10K MORE!

Sounds like you had a GREAT trip with GREAT mpgs...your motor has earned her keep and you owe her one!

Thanks for sharing!

joe.

LOL! Or lack there of wind!! I thought I must have a tail wind, but watching flags and such along the trip most were not moving. The last 150 miles I actually had a light headwind, but it is a overall downhill drive that last stretch as well. I always get better mileage coming from Bozeman vs going.

I think I might have to treat her to a 4" exhaust after such a great trip!!

I just drove from Little Rock to Chicago and my mileage was a calculated 13.5. This was cruising at 77 MPH by the GPS. Just a couple of stops. Engine was ticking over at about 2250 rpm at that speed. Outside temp was 55 to start and -4 at the end.

Bone stock 7.3L with 3.73 gearing. Mileage seems very low to me.

Any suggestions?

Any idea what this would run to have a dealer or other mechanic do it? I am out of town and don't have my tools. I have the 700 mile drive back to contend with and would like to have this done before then.

If there's anyone here in the west Chicago suburbs who'd be willing to take it on, I'd make it worth your while.

H1 I think your looking at parts and labor of $55 for tube if needed to be replaced and 60 - 80 for labor. If you need a new sensor that is about 120. Just replaced my tube. Easy to do with tools and takes about 15 minutes with penetrating oil to help get those darn nuts loose.

I'm sure the diesel owners wish you hadn't posted that!

Using the frequent fairy tales around here.... yes.... it's very low mileage. But I myself would bank on it being very accurate. A friend of mine who had 2 7.3 diesels, his black & hers white, claims he never got much over that on the open road. He also warned me to not expect much over 6-8 mpg in city driving on my V-10. I laughed at him, but turns out he was right on target.

I think it's low but my V-10 Ex used to get 13.5 on the highway on a similar trip, and 10.5 to 11 in mixed driving. I was thinking that I should get 13-14 around town and 17-20 on the highway in the 7.3, which is about what guys on this board seem to be getting.
