Trying to help out a buddy with a soft brake pedal but he has good pads all around. It's a 2006 F-350 4x4.I'm thinking it might be the Master cylinder, but I am in a different place than he is. Are there any problem areas on these trucks that I should have him check first? (ABS valve, hydroboost, etc.)
Do you have a diesel or gas? If you have a diesel your power steering pump may be going out and causing your hydroboost to now work. I don't know it the gassers are the same way but the diesel use the power steering pump to power the power brakes.
If the motor is off and the pedal is soft most likely the master cylinder, unless you have a leaky wheel cylinder letting air into the system. Check behind all the wheels for Brake fluid, if all are dry most likely a master cylinder seeping internally between seals.
Thanks for the hints. It is a diesel by the way. I'm not sure if the pedal is soft with the motor off or not, we'll have to check that one. There are no leaks, and it is 4 wheel disc so there are no brake cylinders at the wheels. Whatever it is, it can't be seen visually.
I was wondering about the possibility that the hydroboost was not regulating it's pressure properly, overcharging the accumulator, but I now think that the brakes are not stopping like they should either. I am still leaning toward either the master cylinder or an ABS valve though.
