If the pan has filings in it, I would definetly flush the cooler or go ahead and put a 6.0 cooler on. Jasper won't warranty 4R100's unless the cooler is replaced. Tells me alot of gunk can get trapped in there.
Does anyone know how much fluid it will take to drop the pan change the filter nd refill.
My owners manual says 17 quarts.. and that is draining the torque converter along with the trans.. There is a drain plug on your TC..(remove the inspection plate and rotate the engine until you get it to the bottom). You will only drain about 1/2 that amount if you don't drain the TC.. If you see metal filings, i would make sure you drain the TC..
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone.I think I dodged the bullet.Pulled the pan and there was no metal at all.Changed the filter and put the pan back on.Only had 6 quarts of trans. fluid so I put it in and called it a night.
Thanks again.
DexronIII/Mercon is still avail under Valvoline,Pennzoil, and various house brands and will continue to be.
I still believe that this new Mercon V was introduced as the "one size fits all" formula after it was thought by F*** that all the trannys that specified only Mercon were out of warranty and no longer their problem if the "new" formula did'nt work.

I won't use it in my '01.
I agree.. If it is still available on my next oil change, i will keep using mercon.. Been using it for 9 1/2 years with no problems...
I just had my 2006 Ford Escape in for it's 35,000 mile check-up and the technician flushed my trans and filled it with Mercron V. The vehicle HAD Mercron in it so I looked in the owner's manual which states, Mercron and Mercron V are NOT interchangeable?!?!
Ford Motor Company won't give my the straight answer...Anyone know the truth?

If I have a correct understanding from what I have read here and elsewhere, this should sum it up. Correct me if I'm wrong:
The older transmissions that specefied Mercon can use either Mercon rated fluids or the new formulation of Mercon V.
The newer transmissions that call for Mercon V can only use Mercon V.
I have an early '99. I couldn't see spending the money on the Mercon V or a synthetic fluid, as I seldom tow and my trans temps get no where near 200*. I went with the Wal-Mart brand of Mercon rated fluid. No complaints, although I'm sure the purists will flame me
