Problem draining coolant

I took out the thermo again and drove without one. The temp got high on the gauge but no blow out of the reservoir. I check the oil via the dipstick and it looks fine. I guess I'll replace the radiator and hoses and see what happens. I was looking at them online and there are some with plastic tanks and aluminum cores. Are these ok or to be avoided? They do cost less and with 160k on the truck I don't have to worry about it last many years.
