I appreciate the rant actually... Very informative. I'm really new to the whole paint thing so like anything else i have to ask questions. The reason i ask is because i'm blasting my truck bed and looking to undercoat it and then prime it maybe. I was looking around on AutoBodyDepot.com at paint and primer and noticed an ISO free primer. My wife is really the concerned one here, although i take every precaution she still worries, in fact she's out buying me new filters for my half mask because she thinks "they look old"...great girl.
Anyway, let me ask you guys this... If i under coat the bed and then strip and prime the upside how long can i leave it that way before painting? Would it be best to just hold off on the priming and wait until i can do the entire truck?
Thanks again.
Duke,
I would chuck your 1/2 mask for a full mask. Your eyes are the most sensitive part of your body, and the air borns (iso) react with the water in your eyes. Upgrade to full face and you will be much better off. Not as good as an fresh air system but alot better than 1/2 mask. If your doing a whole truck make sure you have another set of cartridges for your resperiator. Mine seam to expire before I complete the full paint process. Believe me you will know real quick when you cart is spent. I have a habit of changing them now before I start the clear coat.
Yes to water based paints, as useless for long term protection, (they stinke). All the mfg care about is getting it out of warranty. They need to look further if they want repeat customers. For cars that are not garaged, they do not hold up.
The POA and other alchols in water based are also toxic.
I hear ya Blue, I'll be upgrading to a full mask for sure when it's BC/CC time. I just got a ~16 inch squirrel cage fan from a buddy of mine, traded a primer job on hhis trailer for it, and he got a 12 inch squirrel cage coming... All i need now is the filters, finish the fixtures to hold the fans, a full face mask and oh yeah all of the body work on my truck to be done ....
I get the squirrel cage fans of old furnace/AC units for free, as they were upgraded. I have some 110 and 220 models. Need them in a box where you can have a large surface area filters (pleated) with pre filter to catch the over spray. Set one up for fresh and one exhaust for best performance. Have to filter both. Does make a big difference if you do not have a paint booth.

I do not have a paint booth however i have a plan to convert one stall of my garage to a sort of paint booth. Drop cloths, duct tape and some filters. I thought about pushing clean air in and pulling air from the booth, however i don't want to blow contaminates in as well... I think with two fans pulling, a filter on the input side and exhuast side i should be fine...
Man I will be so glad when all of the body work is done...so i can paint.
