i have an '02 supercab w/ 5.4 and 4r100 that is currently being rebuilt due to a planetary gear being stripped. i installed a 3" lift with 35" tires a week before the tranny went, and i am considering installing a shift kit to help it handle the load of the larger tires. My question is how difficult is the installation of the kit? Is drilling out valves and replacing springs pretty much it? will i be pulling more parts off than just the valve body? Also, would it be a good idea to replace the factory cooler with a larger one? Any help is much appreciated!
Having larger tires is a soc and you need to replace all fluids sooner!! That doublty goes for auto trannies!! I use a mity vac pump to pull a half to full quart of tranny fluid out every oil change to keep the fluid fresh and additives working. I would
get a bigger cooler especially if you use it off road( be sure to keep it free off mud!!)
A trans temp gauge would be a big savior for the tranny Put the sender in the cooling
line with a T and watch the numbers climb while you are sitting at a drive thru or even
at a stop light, It will make you put it in neutral!! I like the digital ones they react faster so you correct the problem.http://www.becontrols.com/tech/ch3aodeupgrade.htm http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/...its_s/3768.htm

The fluid being a little dirty would not have caused that gear to go out. Also a shift kit increases the amount of line pressure inside the tranny. Its going to make the shifts firmer and faster. Changing the fluids sooner is going to mean a longer life. Sooner ie instead of 30,000 for example say 20,000.
The cooler is what is going to make any tranny last longer. less heat = more life. Also consider this when blue beast says the temps are climbing at idle stopped. your tranny has been doing that since day one. As long is it hasnt over heated your fine.
Your going to have to read the instructions online for the kit you want. it all depends how far your going with the kit. Go to the site you want (ie B&M) and look for the kit you want and dowload the manual.
