PS and original steering wheel

Putting PS in the '64 tomorrow. I'd appreciate hearing from those who have done this upgrade and kept the original steering wheel if I should be prepared for any unusual handling issues? TIA

I have power steering in a 65 F-100 and it is all Ford components out of a 72 so it is a little different application than you will be working with but I do still have the large diameter steering wheel in mine. With that being said I notice it is very touchy and does not take a lot of steering movement to make something happen moving the pickup. At first it was very hard to drive as I was use to the non power steering set up and how it took a lot more effort to make something happen. I did have some kind of problem with the non power steering gear box as it required a lot more force compared to other non power steering cars I have drove. But for the first month or so of driving my old pickup I still had it set in my head that I need to turn and this will take some effort so I need to grab the wheel and give it a good tug, and needless to say with the power steering that just wasn’t so. At the time I did the swap the 65 was not my daily driver any more so it took longer to re-program my brain than it would if you drive yours every day. Now though since it has been 4 years I am use to it. Some day I might install a smaller steering wheel but for now the one I have will do.<O</O

Are you using the Ford set up and newer column? If so I dont think the old wheel will fit on the new column.I went with a smaller aftermarket wheel. Before installing the Ford set up I had a bendex setup with the origional wheel. It was a bit of a handful because the bendex was real "twitchy" and did not give me much "road feel".Good luck

I am retaining the original column and steering wheel. The PS set up is from GearheadsND in Bismarck.

bigblockford, your experience is what I was expecting...so, it will just take a little getting used to is all...I can deal with that...thanks!
