Does anyone have a good step by step (with pics) of how to change bearings on an 87 f150 302 4x4? My chilton is no help and I need to replace the inner and outer bearings on the driver side this weekend. When I pull the cap off I see a spring but don't know what to do next. Just pull the spring out and look for a lock nut or what? The shop quoted me $200 and I know the parts are less than $20. I think I am making this more complicated than it is, help!
To remove the hub you first take off the cap and then remove the center section and spring that should be retained with a screw. Then there should be a large clip around the circumference of the hub body you have to dig out with a small screwdriver and one around the drive axle you need C-clip tool for, before the inner hub body can be removed. Now you can see the hub bearings nuts. remove the outer nut with the bearing socket, remove the retainer ring with needle nose pliers, and then remove the inner bearing nut.. the hub/rotor assembly should be loose now. Pay attention to the pin in the inner bearing nut, it must be facing out when the nut is installed so it can seat in one of the holes in the nut retainer ring. If the pin gets pushed back flush into the nut punch it back out the thickness of the retainer ring before reinstallation. This locking mechanism prevents the hub nuts from working loose so it's important it's assembled correctly.
