I have a 1978 Shortbox with a 460 from a lincon that seems to burn oil a bad. Now it runs smooth, seems to have good compression though i have not had it tested, yet some days the truck smells like it burns a lot of oil badly. I do have a small leak but i doubt that would do it. What could cause this other than the rings or a scratched cylinder wall?
My 66 f-100 has a 460 and it also burns oil bad. I was told it was the valve guide seals. I haven't fixed it yet, btu I was told to put brake fluid (about half a small container) in the oil drive with it for a few days and then change the oil. It should swell the valve guide seals, and stop burning oil. It that it your problem. Hope this helps.
I would strong suggest not doing that. You will cause the valve seals to swell, but you will also cause all the other seal (rear and front mains) to swell also, possibly cracking. Then you'd have a heckuva oil leak on your hands that is an incredible pain to repair. Also, there is a good possibility that you can do some bearing damage. Brake fluid is corrosive and could dissolve the precious metal away from you main and rod bearings, and THAT will only lead to even worse problems.

thanx 4 all your help and the opinions. I do think that if the money allows I should build a older 429 or 460 around 1969-1972??!! I guess i will do a few thing and see what happens and then if it gets worse i will consider a rebuild or something. Thanx again!
