Ok, I've got a 06 Fusion and I like the car alot but, lately, the gas mileage really sucks and it's getting worse. If you go by the window sticker, it says the mpg is supposed to be in the area of 22 city, 29 highway or some where in that area. Most of my driving is city, about 95%. I only use the x-way if I'm going a long distance and it's the best and fastest way. Up until about 3 months ago, my mpg was anywhere from the mid 18's to around the mid 19's. IN the last three months It's dropped from there down to the current 16.7 average. That's what I'm averaging today, 16.7. Last week it was 16.9. The week before it was 17.1. Every week it keeps dropping lower. I know that in the winter, your mpg goes down a bit but, this is getting really silly. I'm not a leadfoot driver. I usually keep my speeds at the limit but, never more than five over. If the speed limit is 45, I try to keep it between 40 and 45. Anybody have any advice on whether or not something is mechanically wrong? I'm not much of a mechanic but, I try to keep up on what's going on. My lease is up at the end of May so, I don't know if I should get it checked out or just let it ride till it goes back. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated. I've really liked this car and it's never given me a bit of trouble but, this is really starting to irk me.
It's very cold in Michigan so your gasoline must be lighter (ie contain more light hydrocarbons) in order to be volatile enough to burn. Lighter hydrocarbons have lower btu's which results in lower mpg.
If you live in a state that uses oxygenated fuel in the winter months such as ethanol or MTBE additives it will drop your fuel mileage about as much as you have indicated.
Also be sure tire pressure is up, an out of align tires too much toe in will increase
road friction, be sure brakes are not dragging, Wheel bearings if the grease is dried
out the cold weather can make it stiffer and if it has less oil=more friction!! Are you
sure you are keeping track of everything the same way? are you filling up at the same
station with the pump handle at half to reduce bubbles and get a more complete fill?
Those murphy pumps put out a lot of pressure and alot of bubbles too which gives a
false full tank.
