2005 EB Expy stealthy install
I'm hoping someone here has seen some ideas or can give me some ideas I haven't tried
I have an 05 expedition that I have been trying to figure out a way to do a stealth install on the sub & amps. I'm just going with the door locations for the speakers.
My goal is to have the truck appear stock from the outside and retain the functionality---(all seats fold flat). I use the truck equally for hauling stuff for the house as well as transporting clients. The truck spends a fair amount of time in airport parking lots and other public lots, so anything that catches an eye could be bad.
I am working with an Image Dynamics 10, which needs a minimum of .3cf. I am also trying to hide a RF punch 250.a and a larger RF 30x6.
My truck does have the factory sub, which is a total joke. I"m really just looking for decent sound quality, not something that will wake the neighbors 3 blocks away. I've gone to a couple of shops in my area and and their only suggestions are "we can build a box that you put in the back", which is something I just don't want. Do you have any suggestions or ideas that you might have seen at any competitions or shows?
Please keep in mind that the truck needs to function as it was intended--folding seats, no big extra boxes in the back.
Thanks
Amps I would look at the new line of Fosgates, They have a super small footprint. You could invert the amp and mount it to the seat bottom if there is room. It's tricky because it will have to move with the seat but isn't impossible.
Are you planning on an amp for the door speakers as well?
In my 2000 and 2002, there was room as you mentioned. Starting in 2003, Ford eliminated the well in the back and effectively made it next to impossible to mount a sub.
As for the amp on the door speakers, I can 1 of three ways.
1. Run the punch 250 to the sub and use my 6 channel bridged to 4 for the doors
2. Run the 6 channel only and bridge the last 2 channels into 180w mono, but that won't leave a lot of headroom
3. Run the Punch 250 to the sub and power the doors off of a "high power" head unit. It will sacrifice a little, but it is an option.
I have found a local shop that says they can build a custom box to replace the factory sub, but they want $500 just for the box plus installation, which I'm sure would add up quickly. I"ve been thinking about trying to build the box myself, but I've not had much luck in the past with getting things to sound right.
As far as the amps go, with what you have I would go with option #1, but would take it a step further, I would use the 5/6 channels for a set of tweeters either high in the doors or in the pillars. It would give you way more options for sound quality. I would then add the Rockford 360 processor. Then my friend you would be golden.
Thank you for the input. The $500 is just for the box, not the install. That is extra and they are saying the vehicle will need to be in the shop for 2 days. Any other install---amps, etc, are additional.
They also recommended runing B/A 5.25's with separate tweeters, so that might play into your recommendation of amp usage.
I really appreciate the advice. I'll keep you informed
