what's wrong with running points? my truck has had them for 36 years
it pulled over 10,000 up about a 40 degree hill for about 100 yards to the top of a land fill.
it was also getting like 16mpg on average. this was of course untill the rear end died and took the tranny with it a couple of weeks latter.
There you go, you answered your own question...it was the points that were responsible for all that carnage! If you'd been running electronic ignition, that wouldn't have happened...
Seriously, a lot of folks just don't care to mess with points anymore. To keep a point ignition in top shape requires cleaning and adjusting about every six months and replacement about once a year. Not a big job of course, but still, when there's something better available, why not use it? Electronic ignition gives a hotter and more reliable spark than points. Points haven't been used on production vehicles for 25-30 years, there's a reason for that. Technology advances...
i'm sorry if i bothered any one with my post i meant no harm. I've thought about taking out my breakers but thatt was before i had adjusted them. afterwards i dunno i like to fix things and tinker.
Is the performance that much better with out points than with points?
so basically eliminating point is a maintnance issue not a performance one ?
More of a consistant performance issue. It starts easier, runs better, and gets somewhat better mileage. I guess it is both, I got tired of replacing points every other month. If I could afford to, I would put Pertronix in my 390 powered '71 4x. I just can't afford it right now.

I never had to replce them that offen just at scheduled tune-ups
normally burned points leads to a bad condensor
I would have thought points would be hard to get since most people have no idea what they are
I still have a few dozens sets, but I'll never use them,if I ever do get another point distributer it will be converted to electronic
ahhh ok but isn't the electronic ignition sloppyier compared to the points?
being as the electronic useing magnets and the points use a split second connection?

not at all especially if you have a good amplifier
I run a combination of the HEI. I just don't like the looks of those huge chevy distributors and I want to be able to buy any replacement parts I need at the local store.
I don't need the high performance spark of the MSD boxes and if they break the part has to be sent back to be repaired.
I run a regular Duraspark distributor pushed by an HEI modul like this. http://www.carbdford.com/tech/HEI/hei.htm
IF anything quits I can get the parts almost anywhere. I feel like the HEI is a bit better than the duraspark boxes leaking everywhere.
I hide the module out of site.
No resistor wire and run any 12 volt coil you want.
