Checked the oil on my truck (Job 1, 1850 miles) over the weekend and noticed it was well above the max line on the dip stick. Called the dealer on Monday who said to drop it off asap, which I did Tuesday morning. As of today (Wednesday)they said they are still doing what they described as an extensive diagnosis process Ford recommends when oil level is rising in a PSD. I was told that I would likely hear from them Thursday afternoon with the diaganosis. Can it be that there is a diagnostic procedure that takes 3 days to perform?
Fortunately the truck is not an everyday driver for me, but needless to say I am not happy!

If water is not the cause which should be readily apparent the next thing to check would be fuel dilution. But 3 days??? Now if they send the oil sample out it might take awhile for the results to come back. I could be wrong but I doubt if the dealer has the equipment to make the tests.
Read some other posts with the same issue. If they do there job right they check for a leaking injector, leaking fuel line or a leaking high pressure fuel pump that can leak into the crankcase. The way I understand it is that for the pump the cab has to come off.
Don't let them fool you. The dealership I have change my oil uses Esso 10w30 CJ4 and I called the tech line and was told the maximun fuel dilution before the additives and viscosity break down too low is 2.5%
The lab where my sample has been sent to says anything over 5% dilution is a CRITICAL SITUATION
It is not normal to get a rising fuel dilution in your oil or all the 6.4's would have this issue. It could also be a dripping injector.
Have them pull up TSB 07-8-9 and print it off and read it with the service manager. That way you both go over it and understand it together.
LACK OF POWER, FLUID LEAKAGE FROM TAILPIPE, ABNORMAL TAILPIPE SEDIMENT, WHITE SMOKE, EXHAUST SMELL, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON.
The above condition may be accompanied by elevated engine idle, surging, engine knocking or the crankcase may be over full. Fluid from the tailpipe may be coolant, fuel or oil.
If diagnostic codes P0087, P2291, P0263, P0284, P0300, P0308 or P1336 are retrieved, or if there is evidence of an internal fuel leak (fuel in the exhaust, overfull oil), the fuel supply to the injectors and the injectors should be checked for leakage. If the oil is not overfull the turbo bearings should be checked.
If the codes are P132B, P2262 or P2263, or there is evidence of oil leaks or the oil level is low, turbo actuator operation and turbo bearings should be checked.
If there is evidence of coolant leakage from the exhaust or the coolant level is low, the EGR coolers should be tested.
Additional codes may include P244C or P244D for the PDF. Perform diagnosis on the above codes and engine noise as needed. Care should be taken when running the engine due to the likelyhood of piston hydro lock/engine damage.
Spoke to the dealer again today. They said they need another day (the 4th) to complete the diagnosis. I did not have loss of power, check engine light, white smoke or fluid from the tail pipe. I have noticed an exhaust smell. Here is hoping for the best!

Boat hauler can you tell me how far above the max line your oil read? I checked mine and it is above the max line actually it is about a 16th to an 8th onto the steel braided part of the stick. Also what and where is this exhaust smell. Mine smells really foul outside the truck and and doesnt even resemble the normal diesel smell ( i figured the smell wasnt the same because of the dpf) but i also smell it occasionally in the cockpit and once about 7 or so minutes before a white smokey regen ,the cab really smelled foul , and very intense ,(irritating to the nose and throat)after regen it went away.Any insight from you or anyone would be helpful, i hate being paranoid, but i just put in an after market stereo with a lcd screen speakers amps sub play station2 dvd in back, and i can just hear some service mngr telling me that my problem is caused by my stereo and i voided the warranty. You can laugh but he told me if i was to put train horns on it, it would void my warranty. 08 f350 crew drw purchased 5 months ago, already 1,300 miles. thanks chuck
First your oil level. Watch it. Ford says if fuel seem to be getting into the oil pull out the dipstick, wipe it totally clean and put it back in but keep the yellow dipstick handle and yellow body out till the bottom of the body touches the dipstick tube. Now take it back out and check the level. If now it's overfull there is a problem. I don't agree to it but that's what they say.
Next regarding your exhaust. I say it smells like sour vinegar. Yes it's doing a regen. You are not suppose to smell it in the cab. Something is causing a leak.
They will try to tell you that some fuel in the oil is acceptable due to the regen. A good dealer will check for a leaking injector, a leaking fuel line. Both are under the valve covers. It could also be a leaking fuel pump which is in the crankcase. They probably won't get too serious on this unless you start to get a fairly good amount of fuel in the oil. It may clear up with a few more miles on the truck.

Mine was about the same as yours. Maybe an 1/8 to a 1/4 inch up the braid. I would say by your description that the smell was similar. I notice the smell in the cab if idling for a few minutes, but assume it is coming in through the ventilation system. If the truck idles for a few minutes the whole area around it has the smell. I have never noticed white smoke and do not beleive the truck was in any sort of prolonged regen.

There is another TSB that i think covers your issue.
Some 2008 Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.4L diesel engine may exhibit an exhaust odor inside the vehicle, and/or exhaust smoke may be visible from the front of the vehicle.
ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to inspect the turbocharger to exhaust down pipe connection for a leak.
The test procedure is long but it does not take 4 days. Either the dealer is backed up and puting your truck off or they have found a diffrent issue. They may have found the issue and waiting for ford corp to approve the repair, sounds like you need to get into your service riders a.. and find out what is going on.
Fuel pump - Here we come! Spoke to the dealer Friday (who has been excellent) and they said the injectors and the fuel lines all checked out fine. They said Ford told them to change the fuel pump. They gave me back the truck for the weekend and said to drop it off Monday. I guess it has to be done, but it makes sick thinking about it.
