electric choke operation

I put a rebuilt 3006 in my '83f-150 this winter and just started it for the first time today. Everything looks good except I don't think the alternator is working. Anyway I noticed the choke on the carb{stock Motorcraft 1bbl} is not working either. Since the alt. is not working and the elec. choke wire is hooked to the alt. I assume thats why. Maybe some one here could run thru the operation of the electric choke so I would have a better idea on how it's supposed to work. One other question while I'm here. What is the function of the trans. kick down rod? Thanks much for any help.

The electric choke is a small bi-metallic coil. As it gets hot, it unwinds. A small tang on the end of the coil engages a lever inside the choke housing such that the choke plate is pulled open as the choke heats up. There is a small heating element in the choke cap that heats up the spring. The heating element grounds through the spring, which engages the linkage on the carb, which is grounded through the engine block. The choke is powered off the S (stator) terminal of the alternator. The reason for this is that you only want the choke to be powered when the engine is actually turning, and the S terminal only has a signal when the engine is actually running. The signal is a 12V AC three-phase signal.

The trans. kickdown linkage makes the transmission downshift when you jump on the gas. This is handy for passing on the highway, etc.
