Hello all
Just bought a 98 4x4 XLT with a 4.6 Triton engine. It has 142,000 kilometers on it.The engine is making a loud rattling noise from the front of the passanger side of the engine. After cruising alot of the posts here I learned it is an overhead cam engine, can pop spark plugs, break exhaust bolts and eat main bearings but is a good engine overall.I'm going to trailer it home tomorrow but was wondering if the sparkplugs rattle before they pop or if it is valve train problem. The last owner had taken off the timing chain cover thinking it may be the chain but it wasn't.He figues it might be piston slop but I am not so sure.Going to have some fun ripping into the engine this week.I'll let you all know what I find.
Sounds like the guts in the catylitic converter to me. No the plugs don't make a rattling sound before they pop, a lose plug makes a ticking sound, like a lose or sloppy tappet. Good luck.
Yeah... loose plugs, manifold leak, sound kinda the same... but not a rattle type noise. Cam chain tensioners can really make a rattle, broken glass type noise. My wife has a 97 Mits Eclipse 2.2 turbo, DOHC, since 40,000 miles rattles so bad for the first 5 minutes you can't hear the radio. Has 110,000 miles on it still running strong. Even if he "looked at the chain" you need to run some tests on the tensioners to see if they have bottomed out or are simply worn out. I think the chains themselves will outlive the motor, I would take a hard look-see at that tensioner..Let us know what you find..
Very, very rare for a 4.6 to pop a plug. Piston slap is also a 5.4L issue. You might try running it with the belt removed to find out if it's an accessory making the noise.
He had the belt removed and accessories removed and had only slapped it back together using old gasgets so it was puking oil and antifreeze when he started it for me for a few seconds.
way over his head! lol well good luck with the new truck! looks like you've gotten some good advice, hopefully it leads to finding and fixing your problem! hopefully it's not a main bearing!
Finally had a chance to get into it and this is what I found. The chain was loose,I could almost get my thumb behind it.(Ladies yes I have a big thumb).
i would replace the tensioners on both sides while you're in there. if the chain has noticable slack in it, both tensioners and chains should be replaced, and you can get a kit to replace the tensioners and chains and sprockets. might as well do all this while you're in there. it'll be cheaper in the long run and give you good piece of mind.
