2001 engine life?

Hey guys

New to the forum, and never really owned a ford before. I'm considering buying an 01 XLT extended cab. The engine is a 4.0 6cylinder with 137,000 miles. The truck was well maintained and is in really nice condition. The high mileage makes me hesitate though.

The price of the car isn't that great. It's at a dealer and I'm looking to build up credit so an auto loan is a nice option. I'm just curious how long(generally) the engine will run. Like I said I never owned a Ford and haven't heard nice things, but I'm willing to give it a shot. Thanks for your help

Jon

I think I'd spend some more time looking. The 4.0 should last well, but I wouldn't want to start out with that mileage - especially if the price "isn't that great"!

137,000, thats nothing. The 4.0L is not only capable of reaching 400,000, but they are in relatively good condition by the time they get there.

I'd be more concerned with the tranny than the engine. So long as the engine doesn't leak, and doesn't loose coolant, it is fine, but the trannies need maintenance, and if the previous owner did not service the tranny regularly, you could have problems down the road. Basically all they need is a gentle flush every 30,000 miles or so.

I think PW said it best. Starting out at 137,000 at not such a great price could be trouble with more than just the engine and tranny. There's the rest of the driveline to consider also especially if it's a 4wd. Anything dealing with that could spell $$$. I think the engines can well outlast the tranny (even if cared for properly) and driveline on these Rangers. There are lots of Rangers on the market and if you aren't in a rush you might be better off looking around for a lower mileage/better priced one. Good luck on your search, let us know what you find!

4.0 overheated ones is bad engine.... if 3.0 was overheated and heads did not crack, it runs well after that, but 4.0 sohc overheated ones birns oil with clouds of blue smoke. But aluminium heads dont crack.

Hey guys here is an update.

After passing on the first ranger i decided to buy a 2000 ford ranger xlt extended cab with 92k miles on Sunday. It was in really really nice condition and I paid a really good price for it. I say was in good condition, because yesterday on my way to work someone crashed into my left front end. Front wheel is bent to ****, I imagine the axle is broken, check engine light is on etc... Her insurance will have to pay for any repairs, but I'm sort of hoping they just total it out at this point

That sux... Ranger owners are in love with their trucks because they LAST! See what the insuraunce company and garage quotes have to say before just dumping the truck. My truck reminds me of my long gone MG... Fun to drive.

Any new engine isn't even broken in untill 100,000 miles or need a tuneup for that matter. The 4.0 with proper care should last at least 300,000 miles. It's the other things that wear out and nicle and dime you to death, like water pump, alt, starter, brakes, tierod ends, wheel bearings and so on. These are wear parts and won't last as long as the engine. However the ranger has a good track record for not being expensive to maintain with not a lot of small part failures.
