The manual trans listed in my previous post are the race/high po transmissions. They are not particularly well suited to a 390 4x4.

A T 19 or NP 435 with a Gear Vendor unit would be better. One of the other later model 5 speed truck trans is the NV 4500. You could get bell to fit it, probably aftermarket like Lakewood or other fine brand.

Now what about the bellhousing part, are all toploaders the same case and you just get the bell for the motor you've got?

And no I don't want to spend all kindsa money on a GV o/d unit. If I were to ever get one of those, it'd go in my f100. I would like to think that I could run across a toploader somewhere just laying around but it doesn't look like I'm gonna be that lucky. How many miles are these trans good for anyways if they're properly maintained and not hammered too bad? Can you get 250,000 miles out of them?

An FE car bell, as truck bells are a different depth.

The David Kees website has bell info.

250,000 miles? Probably not. These are car performance transmissions from the 1960s when 100,000 was considered "wow" territory. And they were put in cars that were made to be hammered.

And since the last toploader rolled off the line almost 40 years ago, finding a good one laying around isn't likely. I had trouble finding a good one in San Diego in 1980. $450 was the rate at that time. So $1000 isn't out of line today.

Running a 390 and pinching pennies? All that power and no good way to get in on the ground. Come on, man up and spend a little money. If you're too broke to put the right box behind your big block, then maybe it's time to think econbox.

Nothing personal, I just see this all the time. All the money into the motor for chrome plated Johnson rods, custom fuzzy dice, ******-busting stereo, but "Where can I get a transmission for $50????"

Nothing personal eh? Right...Sorry for being a frugal, full time hard working/learning mechanic. Maybe I should look into the lotto before doing any more. Thanks but no thanks.

73, I don't think he was being a jerk as much as he was representing a large group of us. Lots of us are guilty of wanting more for less. I am kind the same boat as your are. I have worn these gurus out with my indecisive tranny issues. I too want a toploader but can't cough up or afford the ellusive toploader. Especially from Ebay where guys are buying ID tags and not Toploaders. I am currently building a C6 with an aggresive shift kit and the addition of extra clutches. This will allow me to shift manually if I want and will hook up well. C6s are cheap at the salvage yards and really easy to rebuild. I will pickup a toploader when I find a good deal. Many claim that the C6 is one of the best items Ford has ever poroduced. Think about what you really want and listen to the guys that know. If you take their comments too serious then you are in the wrong place. Relax and learn. I too am limited by the all mighty dollar.

Well I just looked at your signiture and you already have a C6. Build the crap out of that thing and be happy until you can buy what you want. Toploaders won't come cheap.

The c6 is in my f100. I'm looking for a stick to go in my fairlane. Right now its got a C4 behind the 289 and shifts fine so far. My plan is, if I can find a stick to fit behind a 390 then I'll build/install a 390 in it. If not, I'll probably build the snot out of the 289 into a 302 or stroker. I've got time since the seems to be driveable so far. Just trying to plan ahead.

C4s are very buildable. I wish I had a Fairlane. My Pops has a '67 Galaxie with a 289/c4. Build the crap out of the 289 and put a World Class TKO behind it. OD is nice. Maybe a 347 stroker?

Ya, I know about the automatics. C4's are tough, but it's no stick and I want something to throw around in the car when I'm driving it. I'm still learning about the 289's as I've never owned one and can't remember ever working on one.

Just what I was gonna say. The 289 has lots of potential. Put the 3/8 rod bolts in, cam, carb, headers, manifold, good valve springs and 7000 rpm here we come.

For the stroker, use a 302 block. I've read here they have longer bores than the old 289 blocks. A nice 331 would outrun most stock 390 Fairlanes.

You can use either the TKO, or you could use a Mustang T5. (maybe, could be shifter issues....) The T5s are laying around. Here's some info.

T-4 Transmission

T-4's were made by Borg-Warner. They were used in Jeep CJ's from '82-'86. The T-5's were used in the same year CJ's also. The T-5 is just a T-4 with overdrive. These are both light duty transmissions used behind 6 cylinder engines.

Thanks for the info, Tom. The T5 is not quite that weak, they use them in performance V8 applications also, in light cars relatively speaking.

Here's a link for the T-4 and T-5 transmissions. Both of these transmissions replaced the SR4 in Jeep CJ's. I had an SR4 behind a mildly built 350 chevy. I went through three transmissions before I swapped in a NP 435. Problem solved. In my opinion they are not worth the money for performance.
