cab mount removal - basic question

So I have the bolts out and the cab lifted a bit. Are the upper and lower bushing connected in some way? Do I have to cut them apart at the body mount? Or do you just pry them out? Can't really tell from looking at them.

If you have replacements, knock the bolt out first, then wack the rubber until it frees up. If you don't, leave it and reset it as is.

I have replacements for everything. I won't say where I got it because I don't want to me admonished again for not buying from a sponsor. I pryed and pryed on the old bushing and I can't get them to budge. I think I'll try using the new sleeve to drive the old one out. That's what I assume is holding the whole thing together.

Tried that and no luck. It's like the upper washer, lower washer and the steel bushing are one unit. Will I cause any problems if I use the sawz all cut them apart at the mount?

No it wont, 40 years of bonding can make a strong connection.

The rear ones will need to be punched out... Remove the bolt and thread it in from the bottom of the truck about 1/4 inch into that big washer/nut, grab a punch thats smaller in diameter than the bolt and insert it in the top of the mount and use a hammer to punch the bushing out. They tend to flare out over the years and are very difficult to remove. The fronts have to be pried apart or, if they were like mine and rusted to dust and you have ALL the replacement hardware, grab the sawzall.

I used the torch on my front cab mount, I think the application heat to the rubber while your cutting the bolt off aides in the removal process. The rears, I just pulled the bolts and the mounts came apart when I lifted the cab off.

Thanks CN Spots - I'll try that as they are definitely stuck together very firmly. A torch? That would have to be the smelliest operation I can imagine given the amount of rubber you'd have to burn through.

It was summer & I was working outside. I won't do that inside my shop. On the 2nd truck I used a air rinder & cutoff wheel to (in place of the sawzall) and then used it to split the side of the rubber mount b/c it wouldn't come loose from the steel spacer.

From what I remember there is a tab inside the bolt hole that "clicks" the two halfs together(I suppose this was factory so it stayed on chassis as it went down the line before cab was set down).

You basically have to beat/cut/destroy the mount(sheetmetal part) to get it apart from frame. I've never bought new mounts, so can't say what they look like. Do they look like they latch together? The sheetmetal portion should have a tab protruding on one half that catches in mating piece. If you only have the rubber portion, then likely you won't realize what I'm talking about til you destroy the factory pieces.

The set I bought is a pair of rubber donuts, bolts, huge washers and sleeves that go over the bolt and locate the rubber donuts - nothing latches on the new stuff.

I kinda figured the repop stuff wouldn't be like the original as it's not critical that it stays together as you assemble it. I suppose the manufacturing of that style would be cost prohibitive. Washers and bolts are alot cheaper!

And keep an eye on your rag joint or you'll be installing a new on like I had to.

Even with the front cap off it was still a pita!

Well I'm pissed now. I ordered the kit from LMC. First, the sleeves for the front bushing were too long so I had to cut them down. That was frustrating but par for the course for dealing with an old truck. Then I get it all together - after using 4 batteries and 2 blades on the saw-s-all - and I crank on the first nut and it won't go on. What the hell. I look and look - they sent fine thread bolts and coarse thread nuts - what a bunch of idiots. Now I got to go down in the morning and buy new nuts and one new bolt (for the one I buggered) and try to get the thing back together in time to take it down to the welder to get the trailer hitch support installed - but that's another story. What a PITA.
