It doesn't blow air? If so, the first thing I would do is run a wire directly from the battery to the blower motor and make sure it works. Also check all the fuses.

Make sure the blend door (flapper inside heater box) is moving to the hot position.

well, it blows sometimes and doesn't others, it will get warm if the selector valve is set just right but as soon as i mess w/ it to try for, say, defrost or something, it'll never go back to heat

Heater only, or does it have A/C?
The heater control on my 1980 is messed up, and it will not change from heat to defrost. The actual control lever is behind the glovebox, and I simply open the glovebox, and operate the lever to select which function I need, be it heat, defrost or off (for the summer). My truck was an early 80, with dealer added A/C.
For the hot/cold side, the control lever is under the hood.
Note: this is for non-A/C equipped trucks, factory A/C is drasticly different.

Not to difficult to change the control--if you can find one. NAPA used to sell
them for some vehicles, I bought one for a Mopar once. I found a good one on a junker. LMC truck might have them.

Mine had A/C, and it was giving me problems, and I found a rotted plastic line that ran underneath the glove box. I am not sure what it did, but it seemed to fix it. Also make sure your line in the engine compartment is in good shape, and also the one that goes to the vacuum resevoir can. The line that runs by the fan area supplies vaccum for the whole system.

You can find the control on ebay occasionally, but it will take patience.
