Exhaust issues

Hey everyone, my name is Jonathan, I'm new to the site and the f-250/350 SD world. Bought my 1999 ext lb 4wd v-10 about 2 months ago. The first thing I did was have a 50 flowmaster with dual outlet installed, loved it. But I couldn't leave well enough alone, and today I installed a ebay y-pipe. Now the exhaust sounds like butt! Any suggestion on what direction to go??? Thanx!

Can you define 'Butt"? j/k

Is it the 'y' or the flowmaster? I think flowmasters sound like, well, butt on v10s in general. Check out team mudd's sig, he has links to sound clips of other systems. Lurk around here, the V10 section, if you can't find him, do a search. Welcome to FTE.

The 70 series will quiet the exhaust down compared to the 50 series but still allow some rumble to get through.

I have the 70 series on mine right now with a single 3" and it sounds good but is a little quiet for my taste though. Flowmaster also makes a 50 series Big Block muffler that is the same length and thickness as the 70 series but will be just a tad louder than the 70.

The 50 Big Block will be quiter than the 70 Big Block. I just got off the phone with Flowmaster to verify that the 50 BB case it 2" wider than the 70 BB case, making it quieter.

The 50 SUV will be louder than the 50 BB or the 70 BB because the case is much smaller, but Flowmaster only recommends the 50 BB or the 70 BB for the V-10. Not to say that the others won't work, but that is just what I was told by FM.

dkf, do you have the Y-pipe with the 70 BB??

I have Thorley headers and y pipe and a dynatech high flow cat.
(Pics in Gallery) The FM70 is too quiet for my taste. I'm going to be sticking on a Dynomax Ultra Flo come springtime. It just seems to me like the FM70 is hurting my upper rpm power. The Ultra Flo will flow over 3 times more CFM than any other Flowmaster muffler.

My dad has the ebay y-pipe w/ a sido 50 SUV on his 03' 6.8l. His exhaust exits in front of the rear wheel (Lightning Style) so it sounds different and louder than exiting behind the rear wheel. The 50 SUV has plenty of capacity for the V10. The case is pretty long 17" or so and it is 5" thick.

I don't know why Flowmaster labels the 50 BB as a 50 series if it is quieter than the 70 BB2. I guess its because the 70 has extra anti-drone chambers.

The case of the 50BB is 2" wider than the 70BB, so it hold more volume. Essentially it's a bigger muffler so I guess that's why it's quieter

Yeah I saw that in Flowmasters size specs, though the 50 BB has a little different baffle setup than the 70 series which looks like it should let more sound through but must not.

Flowmaster should label the 50 BB muffler differently IMO is its quieter than the 70 BB2. With FM the smaller the number, the louder the muffler, might as well keep all mufflers in that train of thought.

What kind of sound do you want to get out of your truck?

What do you have done to it? Headers, Y-pipe?

I bought the Force 2 cat-back for my truck so the FM70BB2 muffler came with it.

I want to get the y-pipe and muffler. I want it louder than stock, but little to no drone in the cab

With the Ebay Y pipe and an FM70 you won't get drone. You may get exhaust flutter from the ebay y-pipe though, my dads has some slight flutter.

If you are exiting the exhaust behind the rear wheel I would go with the FM50 SUV muffler. The SUV still has a chamber or two to kill drone but will give a deep louder sound. To me the 70 series is a little too quiet but it is still louder than stock.

Well I installed a 70 bb flowmaster tonight, and it helped alot. It got most of the tractor sound out of it, curious to see how it will sound after it burns in. Talked to flowmaster today and they said the trouble with my 50 fm is that it did not have enough volume for that big of an engine. I just did think installing a y-pipe would make that much difference. But I'm married, so I'm used to being wrong. lol

^^ that's exactly what they told me about the 50SUV, the 50BB has plenty of capacity, actually more than the 70BB
