04 Engine coolant ?

I just changed the engine coolant for the first time at 40K. The manual says 20.6 quarts.... roughly 5 gallons. It only took 2.5 gallons. I've driven it about 10 miles to get everything circulated and its at the correct level still. I'm a little worried somethings not right. Any ideas?

I always measure the amount I take out, then you know how much to put in. If you drained out 5 gals., it could have air in system.

Unfortunatley I didn't measure but it sure didn't look like 5 gallons game out. If there is air in the system, any idea's on how to get it out? Thank you.

Either loosen a hose on top of engine, or maybe top radiator hose and run eng.

2.5 gallons is probably about right. Unless you do an evac & fill, you will not be getting the fluid out of the block. 5 gallons would be about right for the entire system, not just radiator and hoses. I am sure others will chime in shortly.

Did you only drain the radiator? Or was the entire system flushed?

It would be 20.6 quarts if you did a complete change, if you just drained the radiator you did not do a complete change, you still have the coolant that is in the engine block.

Yes I just drained the radiator. Then I refilled with water. Drove a few miles and re-drained. Repeated that one more time then re-filled with 50/50.

So next question from the rookie is.... how do I flush the fluid out of the block?

I'm still wondering why the fluid even needs changing, being only 40k. Is this fluid not good until 100k. Or is the fluid like the plugs, good to 100k per Ford but will be hell to pay if you wait that long? Just curious. I'm a maintanance man but dam-

You need to check your protection level. If you drain your radiator and then run it to mix with the 50/50 in the block, then drain and refill with 50/50, you are below the 50/50 recommended when it dilutes with the mixture in the block. Depending on where you live this may not be a big problem, but do keep in mind your protection is diminished.

Tomclem- I agree, Ford says 100K, it should be good for that assuming everything else is normal. I'm at 90K and haven't touched the system. When spring comes, I will be changing all my fluids.

Gold coolant is good for 5 years or 100k. I do maint on these and 2.5 gals is about normal for a drain and fill. Gold coolant that is contaminated with green coolant is only good to 45k or 3 years. green coolant that is contaminatesd with gold is still good to 45k or 3 yrs
