the fans pull so much power and with the air clutch there is no partial engagment like the viscous clutch, they are either on or off

I see. The more I thought about it and looked at the one thats on the 359' the other day, I figured it might be possible to do. I wasn't real sure on the operation specs. I knew that they really sucked down the power when they are engaged. I'm sure the air clutch is complete overkill.

Alot of other stuff is air powered on them too. Since air problems is alot easier to troubleshoot than electrical problems, it makes sense.

I ended up putting electric fans in my 97 PSD, works great, heaviest gross weight I have pulled is 18500 lbs, no overheating issues at all. The one benefit that I have going for me though is it is manual. I am going to be putting electrics on my EX, but don't plan on towing any thing with it.

back in the '80s eaton was expermenting with an electric controled clutch that worked like hortons air clutch, but never kept up with it to see if it went into production

the put the fans on two of our new f-700s with 370 gas engines

Someone on here did the calculations and found out it would take an insane amount of amps to power an electric fan that could move as much air. I think it was around 800 amps. Anybody know how many HP the fan uses when its fully locked?

Why hasn't someone put a clutch on a viscous hub?
Sort of a best of both worlds.

Ive seen articles that you gain 10-15 HP by removing the clutch fan and installing the electric fans. I have a dual electric fan set up (2 years now) and love it, my fuel milage increased 1.5-2 MPG.

The stock fan 6000 CFM fan is rated at a specific RPM, I want to say it is 3000 rpm but cant remember where I saw that. Before doing electric fans you need to look at what your driving application is and what your transmission is. I have pulled 18000 lbs or better with no over heating problem on my 97, but I have a manual transmission, I think my biggest worry would be the auto tranny cooler. I would never recommend doing the mod without guages to monitor the transmission. My dual 13" fans move twice as much air than my stock fan at idle at least, so in stop and go traffic my truck cools better and my AC workes better than ever before. At speed going down the road I notice no difference, but the ram air combined with the fans again are no issue. I would venture that most of your stock fans are moving on average 4000 CFM of air during normal driving, and most of us have trouble getting our engines to temp any way. I have a friend that pulls horse trailers in steep terrain high altitudes at slow speeds 25 mph or less, a high engine work load at low speeds (e.g. full throttle to maintain 20 mph for extended peroids of time) An electric fan is not for you, but then you wouldn't want to see what is fuel mileage is either, and I don't think electric fans is gonna make much difference at that point. Any have fun what ever you do, and may PMS (powerstroke modification syndrome) live on.

I have Dual 14" fans, Made a custom shroud out of sheet metal (pic in my gallery) electric thermostat, water and tranny guage. I have a 24 ft toy hauler and have never had any overheating issues (automaitic trans) 130K on truck, everything is original, Ive had the truck 8 yrs and no problems, it even has the original CPS! Gotta love the 7.3!

Where did you get your fans? Is there a specific car model that works the best? I'm sure the electic motors come with the fan when you find them in the junkyard.

The fans on the truck in my sig came from a Mercury Villager.

You can use your shroud for a templet to trace to sheet metal. I used 1/8" diamond plate aluminum.

I tow non-stop. Never had an issue.
