I was trying to think of ford's track record with regards to head/intake design.

in 1993 they introduced the mod motors in the smaller production lines; in 1996 they went full blown with the mustang, 1997 f150.

3 (or 6 depending which way you think about it) years later, in 1999, the mustang gets PI heads, 40hp gain, lil' torque. f150 gets the pi heads again, 1 year later, in 2000.

4 years later the f150 gets the new 3v heads first, albeit the mustang is shortly after with the 2005 models hitting dealerships as soon as april 04.

It's been 4 years since, and it looks like we're due for a new revised head design. I'm guessing if that is to happen, the 3v PI, or whatever they'd be called, and if the gain is similar, we'd have a relatively popular upgrade for the rest of us (kinda like how the pi heads are for 96-98 mustangs). this is all speculation, of course, i'm just trying to establish a pattern to ford's product development.

Now if only the hurricane/boss/whatever next generation motors will have the major components interchangeable with the mod motors - aka same block mounting points, same flywheel/bellhousings, so that swaps in mustangs/f series are as easy as they are today between the 4.6 and 5.4, we'd all be happy campers, I bet...

Actually the 4.6L has been in Large cars (Crown Vic, Town Car, Marquis) since 91.
The picture of the test mule in the Roush drag car has a different looking plug placement and valve cover if I recall correctly. Also, the BOSS engine is going to have a larger bore spacing, so the cylinders are going to be farther apart which would make the heads unusable on the current modular block.
