I saw something akin to this posted elsewhere on this forum, but it applied to an older model Ranger. My "door ajar" light on the dashboard of my '99 Ranger XLT (4.0L) has been lighting lately for no apparent reason (like, say, the door actually being open). I understand the design of the door switches was changed somewhere in the design process - for instance, I can't find the traditional "push switch" in the door jamb that exists in other vehicles. Does anyone have a clue about the new switch design, where it might be, and if there's a quick fix for this issue? I don't want to have to tear my doors apart looking for the switch if I can avoid it, and I'd also like to avoid a trip to the dealer.
To quote Ken.... "The switch is in the door latch and this is a very common problem. Spray electrical contact cleaner in the latch. If you do a search for door ajar you will find many posts."
i have a 2000 ranger and recently had this problem with mine that was driving me crazy, a chime going off every time the door ajar light came on. after searching this forum i went to home depot and bought a spray can of electric contact cleaner from the electrical dept. i sprayed the latches for a few days and the problem went away, it did take a couple of days though.
Well, I gave it a try, and it seems to have worked. I guess I should have mentioned that my Ranger XLT is a SuperCab, so it's got front and back doors. So I sprayed both door latches, and the light went right off when the door closed.

Thanks again for the help!
Might be helpful for others, to know which product worked for you folks, if it was other than WD-40!!!!
bought at home depot: brand=CRC,electrical grade, 2-26 plastic safe multi purpose precision lubricant, 5 oz spray can, cost= $3-4 i don't remember.HTH
Well, the brand was CRC, but what I got was the electrical contact cleaner - about $6.98. I thought about the lube, but decided the problem was the contacts not making contact. Seems to have worked - I do worry about lack of lubricant on the latch, but not that much (at least until the door stops opening )
