I have a 1989 f-350 with a 460 5 speed 90,000 miles. It is using a qt of oil about every 200 miles. There is no visible leaks I have not seen it smoke. It leaves no spots on the shop floor.
Changed sprak plugs and number 8 was loaded with white stuff figure it si fly ash from burning oil. put nre plugs in and have driven it for a couple of months still using oil. did a compression check this week and all cylinders have 140-145 lbs compression. but Number 8 sparkplug was darker and in comparison to the other plugs looked terrible. the other plugs still looked new. The truck doens't miss but it also doesn't idle as smooth as I think it should. Yet idle vacume is solid and above 18 inches. Any Ideas would be appreciated.
Good compression means good sealing, so its not rings, valves. Could be valve guides... Dont know why that would happen on only #8, but it could..
stock intake? May be an oil leak into #8 runner, not sealing up against the head..
Just a couple of ideas... Good luck!

the 429 in my 78 bronco uses a quart every 100 miles, and i don't see smoke either...but it is there....not very visible because, i am told, it is such a large engine...still haven't traced my consumption...haven't done a compression check, but yes, yours sounds like valve guides....
This engine is pure stock intake and all. I have heard a rumor that Ford had some intake problems on this engine of about this manufacture date. Any one know anything specific? I just finshed changing the Intake valve stem seal on the number 8 cylinder this morning. I did not find the valve to be loose in the valve guide and the original stem seal was intact. I did this without removing the head. Guess we will drive it for awhile and see if this helped or not. I do not have a lot faith in this fixing the problem. Any other ideas let me know.
I have a 400 with the exact symptoms you have. I have discussed it on here quite a while back as I was trying to figure it out. In my case I think it is a broken oil ring on the piston. I had all new guides put in the heads and stem seals also, it did not help anything even though the guides were worn badly. I had no smoke, leaks, good vacuum, and good compression, it uses 2-3 quarts a week now and still runs fairly well, it is starting to take a dump though finally. I just milked it for all it had. I'm going back with the 460.
