Hello all,
I just returned home from visiting an uncle in NE. While there; I took a look at a 53 F250 I bought a few months back, on Ebay. The 53 had it's 239 Flathead 8 pulled sometime, by a PO In it's place is a 50's 223 inline six. I am planning to install either a 59A flathead 8, or a 300ci inline six. I will probably remove the factory diff (with 4.86 gear ratio), for a D60 (to retain the 8 bolt lugs), and say a 3:55 or 3:73 ratio. The factory 4 speed will also probably be replaced, with a Chevy S10 T5. The 53 is still in NE. I plan to trailer it home to IL over Memorial Day. Anyway, here a link to my Flickr account with some pic's of the 53: FTE staff note: please use direct URLs instead of URL redirection services
If it was me I'd go with the 300. It'd give you tons more torque, and probably more hp than the older 59A. You mentioned over on the HAMB that you want to use the truck as a salt flats push vehicle. Getting 'er up to speed is gonna be a function of having buckets of torque. That's what 300s are known for.
Stu,
Thanks for the welcome! Turns out I joined this site a year or so back, and forgot. I'm on so many forums, it's hard to keep up at times LOL Yeah; the 300 is a great motor! I had a 94 F150 XL with one in it, and pulled some HEAVY loads. A little slow, but got her done! I am thinking (as you), that the 300 would be the best choice. I could probably sell the 223, to help out towards a decent used 300. Someone suggested the Cummins 4bt diesel, which would be wild
That's a subject that my kid and I kick around a lot. I've got an old Power Wagon that my son wants to repower with a bread truck 4bt some day. It'd give you the torque, but would play heck getting out of its own way. And they're heavy.
Well welcome sounds like a good project you got planned out well according to your join date which is beside your posts and location it says 2000 for you
The 300 is a great engine, espeically couple to a manual 4spd. Its not he most fuel efficient engine around but you can't beat the amount of torque the thing makes.
I too have an old Dodge truck that my son (now 13) has laid claim to. He either wants to make into a 4x4 or drop a cumming in it or both. It would be a really cool truck with the deisel engien in it.
oh stu how could you suggest a 300 over a flathead ????? shame onyou ! {BIG LOL } . the 300 is a good engine but i dont think that s-10 5 speed is gonna stand up to it especially if you use the grunt monster to pull or haul anything . why not go to a bone yard and get a np 4500 ? it's the ol' granny low cast iron monster the big three have used for awhile with an overdrive , so you know it will take the abuse .
Stu and All,
Thanks for the continued feedback! Dustin, I guess I have egg on my face. I forgot your join date is located in the upper right hand corner of your post. Can't believe it was 2000 when I joined! Again; I guess I am on too many forums Yeah; the Cummin's are great engines! I have a 93 Dodge W250 toy hauler, with the 5.9 6BT. Awesome motor! The 4BT in the 53 would be wild, but I would really have to beef up the front frame. Those diesel's are heavy!!! Most likely; I will go with the 300 six. I could keep the factory 4 speed, but I would really like overdrive. Seems like alot of rodders put the T5 behind 350's, so the T5 should live behind the 300? I have a ford ZF from an 80's F250 in the garage. Don't know the stoutness of the ZF 5 speed, vs the NV4500? NV4500's seem to go for pretty good $ at bone yards. Around $800 here in Northern IL.
I've got a ZF 5 speed 460 in my daily driver. Don't like to feed it, but love it. You'd have to work out bell housing/clutch issues, but I'm sure somebody has done that before. Good luck. Stu
i dont know if it was a zf or not , but i got a buddy who's got a 93 f-150 4x4 with a little 300 six and had some 5 speed gear box in it . it wasnt the nv 4500 , but anyway he kept breaking the thing when he'd go off road playin' and put it under a load . i know the 4500 is pricey but in the long run is it gonna work better ? i am one of the most notorious tight a--es you will ever meet but i will think about the durability / longevity and spend a little more from time to time . i would love to have a 5 speed myself and my stock flatty hasn't got enough power to hurt anything , but i'm putting the stock t-98 back in it to replace the light duty 3 speed it came with . at least i know if i beat on it it's not gonna break , and yes i will beat on it , it is a truck . i figure i'll run into a 5 speed or a aftermarket od kit cheap somewhere one day .
Stu & F350,
I am sure I could use the ZF 5 speed. It's out of an F250 4x2. As mentioned the NV4500 is a great trans, but they tend to be pricey at the bone yard! 55; I know about the weak 5 speed behind the factory late model 300's. My 95 F150 XL, had the Mazda 5 speed. It was definitely a light duty trans!!! My 95 didn't have a granny first either , which I like in a work truck.
