Hi, I'm looking at doing up my '51 f6 COE to haul hay etc, right now it's all there except the motor (had experience with flat heads and don't want to go that route). What I want to know is what has anybody used for frame and running gear??? I don't necessarly need to swap out the frame, but it does seem a little heavey for my purposes
buy a swap kit and put an fe or a 385 "lima " series fat block in it . of course this should be followed by lowering it , a custom bed ......................... i dunno but i thought the y blocks share a simialar mounting arrangement . someone will be along shortly .
I have a '73 F350 with a 428 that I can sacrifice for the project...so your say that should fit w/o much problem? what I would really like to find out is if somebody has swapped in a lighter frame out of ?????
seeing as it is a coe i dont know . if it was 'nt it , the cab would physically bolt to the lighter frame . 51 dueller has an interesting tech peice i used myself for reference on a frame swap i did , using later frames , mine was a 74 1/2 ton . maybe look at it and steal some of the ideas and put it on your 73 ??????? i think the biguns had double wall frames that the guys were said to be real prone to rusting out from trapped garbage tween the walls anyway . the you really could put a regular bed on it . also check out tomoto's pics of his coe's they will blow you away .there is some now in the what's in your driveway thread {?????} . his work is just freaking awesome . sorry best looking driveways i'm gonna go over and bump it up to the top .
The good thing about a COE is that the cab rides on a sub frame. It can be mounted to almost any frame by fabing a new sub frame or altering the originial . You will need to consider engine size, wheel width, and steering connections. The rest is pretty doable. I am currently working on mounting a 48 F6 COE cab on a c---y C30 frame. The guys at the Old COE Trucks discussion group have a lot of good info about this topic.
frankcowan is right. You can simply cut off the square "subframe" from the original frame and set it over the new frame and fab up new mounts and weld it to the it. Thats what I did on my 48 COE when I set in on a 1 ton Dodge frame. Really easy to do.
