Delawhere..Your friends truck has problems. We pulled a 13K plus 5th to Flordia in November with the 6.4l and did much better than that with a defective DPF. With a replaced DPF we are also doing much better than that solo here in central Florida. You friend should start by checking his truck for soot in the tail pipe..he may have a defective DPF which will effect all over performance. Also our truck is doing better as we get miles on in..we are now at 6600 miles and saw a MPG improvement at 6K miles.

We do have the 4:10's but have friends with the 3:73 pulling similar campers and doing better MPG than you friend......His truck is broke....

Two other possiblilities of 6.7mpg towing. Towing at 70-75mph, also if he ran a few tanks of None ULSD. my 450 with 4.30's averaged 8.76 towing 16,650# but I did not drive it much over 65. Most of the time my average was probably 62mph when the speed limit was 55 or 60. You get over 65mph and the wind resistance really takes it toll in fuel milage and get those rpms over 2000 those turbos stay kicked in at a much higher rate than the 06's. The 08's run so much quieter than the 06's so it is harder to feel the speed. He might be running 5mph or so faster than he did with the 06. Noticed the average speed on the highway people seem to run 75mph average rather than 65. On a trip to New Haven a couple of weeks ago through Conn. I ran 75mpg with our Escape and I was the slow poke. It was incredible how many people were doing 85. Next time on longer trip I'll take our Armada so I can feel more comfortable running 80mph. Just some thoughts on why the difference, could be other issues.

richfaa I agree that something is wrong with his truck but he has had in into the Ford dealer and they drove it and did the 3rd gear check the boost thing and said all was Oky DOKY!! Not what he wanted to hear at all. And Firehawk, I know for sure he has not run anything but ULSD in his truck. On the trip to Florida he told me he had to leave a Loves truck stop because they didn't have ULSD. He had to go a bit further down the road to find it. He does run a lot of short trips with it and the possibility of a sooted up DPF initially could be a problem but on the 1000 mile trip to Fl. it should have cleaned itself out. He does travel between 70 and 75 mph but he did that with his 03 F250. With all that said I don't know what else can be done until Ford comes up with a solution to the poor fuel economy. If too many people complain about the mpg's, Ford sales will surely drop but improve for the Chevy Duramax.

This is something that is not completly understood yet.The tail pipe should never have soot in it.. the DPF eliminates soot. At 70/75 MPH the MPG will suffer..it is the same in the durimax' and the Durimax is a lot lighter than the Ford. You can not compare the 08 with any earlier year. They were all different.

I got pretty much what you want to tow. I have an 08 F350 DRW 4X4 with 4.30 gears. I tow a 39 Foot 5th wheel Weekend Warrior CR3905 Loaded with all the toys and gear, I get an average of about 6 MPG.

Here is my setup:

I pull a 35' 5W RV with about the same setup as Larry NCKS (except 2WD) and get between 10 and 13 mpg. Mostly interstate, Texas, La, etc.

Some of you guys towing those high rv things, wouldn't a wind deflector help? I'm looking to get one for my truck. Also the 6" air dam actually helped with stability. The wind doesn't get underneath the truck, makes it feel more planted. MPG due to the air dam? Maybe half a mile better to the gallon, I should be able to tell after my trip from Las Vegas to Washington and back.
