Recently I saw some 429/460 stroker cranks for sale on ebay? Would adding this crank to a build-up recipe add towing torque? How would I have to change pistons and heads, or what would I need to be concerned about? Or is a stroker crank mostly used in race applications?
Thanks,
Tony

Tony, you normally have to have different rods since to get the extra stroke the crank is off set ground to a reduced size. It's quite typical to see a C*** rod that takes a 2.2" bearing instead of the standard 2.5" Ford bearing. Pistons are normally different also. Most stroker kits are NOT suitable for any serious racing unless you spend the extra money and get a forged steel crank. I broke one myself (drag racing)and after calling around and talking to a number of vendors found that is not uncommon with the cast cranks. I would think using a stroker kit for towing would be O.K. since you'll never be spinning more than 4,500-5000 RPM. If you go with a kit make sure its ground on a "3Y" crank...they have more metal in the journal area and are therefore lots stronger.

I think a lot of the problems with 460 cast stroker cranks used in racing is how well they are machined and prepped. A friend used only cast strokers in his 4wd pullers for years, and never broke one. We are talking 8000+ rpm. He used only 1 company out of Memphis and personally took the cranks to them himself. I believe its all in knowing how to put the combo together.
