My abs light comes on when I hit the brakes and the goes off if I re-start my van ['97 3.0 shorty]. Then it stays off until the next time I drive it and goes on when I hit the brakes, and then off when I re-start. What could be happening?

First thing to do is check your fluid level ,if low second thing to do is find out why it's dropping. There is a recent thread on this. My problem is the RABS valve is leaking. Yours could be similar , the RABS unit is available reconditioned in the U.S. if the light is on then likely there is a problem in the valve assy.

It's to the left & below the master cylinder on the 3L. Easily visible & accesible. If the light is on you can access codes if RABS2 system is installed.
Do you have brake fluid leaking ?
The shuttle valve could be stuck due to corrosion or you could have a leak in the system causing the sensor to detect abnormal shuttle valve position. Basically the valve serves to protect the brake system from failure & also works as bleed off to the rear brakes to prevent wheel lock-up (ABS).

Reason: update
The shuttle valve use at the front most end of the master cylinder, and there is a sensor switch screwed in from the front to detect it. One of the things that happens is moisture gets in there and shorts it out, causing the ABS light to come on. You can unscrew it to see if there is corrosion forming. If so, clean it out, and see if it helps.
I checked the fluid and it was down. I filled and the light does't come on. There are no leaks around the master cyl., so I guess I should check the wheels to see signs of fluid.
You may not have a leak but it is good to check in-case. Normally brake fluid will drop really slowly as the pads/shoes wear down. While your checking the wheel (slave) cylinders have a look at the brake linings...... if they are getting low, could be no leak at all, just piston movement to accomodate the worn linings.

Here is a pic of the RABS Valve.

Soon as the weather gets 1/2 decent I'll get this valve replaced, a new one costs $170 CAD. I believe it could also be the cause of the rear brake inefficiency, since I also get a long pedal stroke. Also if I use the E-brake I can feel a slight decceleration fluctuation while the car slows down, which I dont feel when the brake pedal is applied . I think this is due to slightly oval drums.

I had the brakes serviced and there was 50% left on front and rears.
The back brakes were glazed and only stopping about 5%, so they tell me.
The abs light has'nt come on since I added fluid to the reservoir.
