can can you tell the difference between a good type of towing chain and a cheap set that will just break. i need to use this for towing out of mud holes. do you think 3/8 chain is big enough? should i be looking for welded links, galvinzed cahin or what?
Here is a good reason not to use chain, We deliver a liquid product to strip mines. Sometimes the roads are just plain knee deep muddy and have to be pulled up hills to get in to deliver. One of our drivers got stuck, A Cat 12H grader come down to pull truck up. They hook a heavy duty chain (i'm talking the link sized as big as your fist), hooked up the truck and started to pull, about halfway up, the chain snapped and came back through the radiator, fiberglass hood, and into the windshield. driver was not hurt, but did have to change his chonie's.
In short, It's dangerous. Just don't do it.
Straps!! I also have a 30k strap I use for pulling, and except for pulling the smallest car its great. For the smallest cars I use a 15k strap since its smaller and can hook easier.
Definitely get a properly rated tow strap and make sure you have proper vehicle attachments for it! NEVER attach a tow strap to a vehicles bumper or tow ball. When (not if...) those break off they become effective killing projectiles.
