Tranny Cooler????

First off....I drive a 94 f-150 with the 300 and I believe the E4OD(since it has overdrive).
Now my question is...does this combo have a tranny cooler in the stock set-up???
MY truck has a smaller rad in front of the bigger one.....BUT, It is connected with the large rad. the out from the rad goes to the smaller rad and the out on the small rad goes back to engine.
I have never seen anything like this and can't believe this is normal.

Can someone enlighten me on this.

And ...if it is in fact a tranny cooler...would it need to be replaced before it could be reconnected to transmission? or could it be flushed out and used again as a tranny cooler???
I haven't checked the tranny as were in the middle of a snowstorm and I would have to shovel to get under my truck.

The air conditioner condenser is usually larger and not connected to the radiator, but sits in front of it in the core support.

This is the transmission cooler and from my understanding, it uses the radiator as some additional cooling when sitting in traffic, etc. and the air used to help cool the smaller radiator just won't cut it.

If your flushing the transmission fluid, you can pressure the old coolant through or run some transmission flush through the lines until it comes through the other line.

If it is leaking, replace it, otherwise make sure it is plumbed in the same way it is now to help your transmission from overheating, esspecially when towing.

does it have rubber lines going to it or hard metal lines attached at the top and running toward the motor?

Yes all the automatic transmissions have transmission coolers.
I think, not sure, tranny cooler lines are on the right. (may be left)
You should have a air conditioner condensor, possible engine oil cooler, and you do have a tranny cooler. If your lines go from the radiator to the small one back to the radiator, it should be the tranny cooler. The small one on the front would be one somebody added to help cool the tranny more then the stock system. If it lookes like brake lines it's the tranny.

Sorry didn't think about it before. If you have OD,3,2,1 on the colum you have an AOD, if you have 3,2,1 and an OD off button on the dash you have an E4OD.

Did they do internal and optional external only, or internal, and both hooked together?
His are both hooked together. Leads me to belive aftermarket tranny hooked in.

Does it go back to the engine or towards the engine?

Hey, thanks for the replies guys
First off....I don't have air conditioning on this truck......unless rolling the window down counts as air...

I do have the OD off button on the end of my gear selector on the column, which from what I have read before tell me I have the E4OD.
...The way it has been set up
**edit**

I am checkin lines now and will repost in a minute

Ok... now keep in mind I was in a snowstorm and had checked in the dark after a 12 hour day and just spent an hour and a half driving home in it.

So no I do believe things are ok.....I had just never seen this kind of a setup before.
"dkhollins" ....you were right....the tranny coller uses the main rad for additional cooling.

Now if you are lookin from the front of the truck....There is a large rad hose which connects on the upper right. a small line connects on the left side just below the cap and it feeds into heater lines(one of 2 smaller hoses running to heater core area on other side of firewall).
Then there are 2 more oulets on the left sideo maid rad which work with smaller tranny cooler.
One tranny line goes straight into smaller cooler...then feeds back to main rad and the other trannyline connects to last connection at bottom left of main rad.
And...now that I think about it...I do believe my old Trooper used the main rad to cool the tranny as well.
oh and dk...the leak was simply small coolant line clamp at rad was loose....tightened it up and all is good

Like I said...it had been a long day...
Thanks again for all the replies......

Most cars and trucks with a auto tranny use the rad to help cool the tranny fuild or at least every rad that I have replaced on my auto cars do.

I guess it's all relative as they say.
The only rads I have replaced have been my last car...a Paseo. It took a rock on the highway.
Other than that...I had to replace the rad on my Trooper. The previous owner had secured the fan shroud with coat hanger wire clips. It came loose while offroading one day. When I got back onto the road..the wind blew it into the fan which kicked it back into the rad, making a big mess of the rad.
The funny part about that day was that my brother suggested we go offroading, since he had just bought a new jeep. But it was my birthday and the outing was a diversion while a party was organized back at his house...Well they had lots of time as we were about 3 hours late getting back.
