An electrical question
Is it legal to drill a 1/2 inch hole into an electrical box and install one of those chain pull switches?
It's a ceiling mounted 4 square box with an outlet, for a four foot florescent light fixture.
I don't want it on every time I turn on the garage lights.
Thanks.

You'd safer by installing an inline switch in the cord

Not this cord. It's one of those extension looking cords that come attached to the light fixture.
My other light fixtures have a 1/2" knock-out for such a switch, but not this one.
It looks like the fixture is a sealed unit.
Plus it's on the ceiling.
EDIT: Never mind.....it comes apart, so I can drill a hole in it.
Sorry.
But for question sake, is it legal to drill a 1/2" hole anyway into that 4 square
box for a pull chain switch?

doesn't it have a 1/2 inch knock out? why do you need it to be legal?

Probably not in Ca. (Just kidding) I think that it would be as long as you use the appropriate fitting for the job.

I just like things legal; except for applying for building/electrical/plumbing permits; unless I really have too.

It shouldn't cause a problem.

Shouldn't cause a physical problem as long as the hardware you use is approved... UL, CSA etc.
I know that up here in the cold, Quebec residents aren't legally allowed to modify wiring in the home, I expect that to mean garages as well..

Replace the cover on the box with one that will accept a regular light switch. Anyplace like Lowes, Home Depot will have them.

Good idea.
Replace the cover with a 'pull chain' light socket and wire the 'down the line' lights to the switch with a 'pigtail'.
No drilling.
Black wires and Red wires are 'Hot'.
White wires are 'Common'.
Bare copper or Green insulated wires are 'Ground'.
Use the appropriately sized wire nuts and turn off the circuit before putting your hands into it.

Normally we wouuld drill a 1/4" hole and use a Greenlee hole cutter die to make the 1/2" hole to limit the number of burrs. Also conduit holes are larger then 1/2" as they are designed for 1/2" conduit which has a larger outside diameter.

I think I'll do both; punch a hole in the light fixture, for a pull chain switch, and
put a combo switch/outlet with cover plate on the box.
Thanks.
