2001 Expd automatic dash lights delayed

Hi! When I have the lights in the automatic mode, there used to be a slight delay between starting the engine and the dash lights coming on. I used to think of it as some sensor determining if it is dark enough to turn on the dash lights.

Well, a few weeks ago, the lights would delay a few minutes before coming on. Now they sometimes don't come on for an entire 15 minute ride. Tonight they popped on as we pulled into our street after being out for a while.

Oddly enough, the headlights do not have a problem automatically coming on. Any thoughts? Is there a little sensor or fuse I need to replace?

Thanks for an guidance anyone can provide.

- Chris

Sounds to me like you have a loose connection somewhere. I think where I'd start is at the light switch connections. Pull your switch and pull the connectors and look them over for a loose wire, if you don't find one you could try cleaning the contacts with some contact cleaner and see if that takes care of it.

How do you pull the light switch? Just give it a yank? You are talking about the switch on the left for turning the lights from automatic to off to parking to on, right?

BTW, I can turn the lights all the way on and the dash illuminates. Then turn it all the way back to automatic and the dash remains dark, but the headlights are on. And when the dash lights decide to illuminate on their own while I am driving (in the dark), there is a click - like the normal click I used to hear nearly immediately after starting the truck when they used to come on normally. Does that help any more? Or is it probably just a bad light switch?

This will show you how to remove the light switch, at least I think the 01 is the same. Give it a try. I'm still thinking it's a bad connection or switch. http://www.scribd.com/doc/377317/Expedition
