I had a mechanic tell me that my alternator is probably not bad. Ive put on a new alternator, voltage regulator, coil, solenoid, battery, and summit racing 18 circuit wiring harness. I have the feeling that all my problems are related to the wiring harness, but cant seem to figure it out. At first i had a problem with my battery dying overnight. Then i got that fixed and now i cant seem to get the alternator to charge the battery so i only make it a few miles down the road. I am extremely confused about the wiring of the voltage regulator to solenoid to starter, to the battery. seeing as how i originally removed these wires thinking they came with the new wiring harness. (I know im an idiot). I also have a basic ford electrical manual. I have looked and looked and as best as i can tell the wires are all where they should be. Somebody maybe had this problem before or knows what i am doing wrong thanx. J.R.
If you can post some pics of how you have it wired and try to better explain where the wires are going (color of wire etc.) we might be able to help. You can have the alternator and battery checked at Autozone or Advance and probably other parts stores. That way you should know what you are starting with. On these trucks if the voltage regulator does not have a good ground it will not charge.
I figured it out, its charging now. But now i have a new problem. I disconnected the negative terminal of the battery and ran a test light from the negative battery post and the negative battery cable and something is still using juice with the key off. I pulled fuses until all of them were out of the fuse panel and the test light still remained on. Any advice? Its in the wire harness im sure. Its a brand new summit 18 circuit wire harness. To the best of my knowledge i ran everything as i was supposed to.
