Just bought a 2003 PSD with 88000 miles runs excelent with a egr valve replacement as the only warranty work done. I don't hot rod or pull heavy loads. My question is what are the possibility and at what millage does this head problem happen. I didn't know about the problem untill I got the truck and found this site.
There is no magical mileage mark wherein head gasket failure can happen. If the truck has made it 88K miles, I think it is a pretty safe bet to say that it will go another 100K miles with no problems...with proper care, obviously.
you really have nothing to worry about. if, like you say, you don't hot-rod and you don't haul, you can expect long life from the gaskets. It's the other minor things that can crop up. like leaks, another egr issue. by the way, since it's an 03, take it to the dealer have them do exhaust backpressure sensor and icp harness recall, i just had mine done along with a new egr valve.
EBP sensor recall is not recent, prob a few years now, the truck has just the dealership for the first time in years, that's why it was done. As for the ICP, now I'm starting to question myself if it was in fact the ICP harness, It was injector control something. On my '04 it's on the passenger side valve cover, right in the middle. Don't know if it's recent, sorry.
seems like a lot of the head gasket issues are due to overboosting from turbo vanes sticking, you might consider putting in a boost gauge so you can get some warning if the turbo starts malfunctioning. also run the crap out of it every now & then so the turbo get`s A good workout.
