4.0L Head Gasket issues
I have an '02 Explorer XLT with a 4.0. My Brother in Law has a '99 with the same engine. It has blown head gaskets. The ford dealer told him that was VERY common with these engines and they have been disappointed with Ford's response.
i have 80,000 miles on mine. Seriously considering a trade because of this info.

It's rare for that engine to have blown head gaskets. It's not too uncommon to see some intake gasket issues.
Replace the head and intake gaskets during the fix and run it. It's a good motor.
