While I know there are a large number of things that can make the light come on (a 98 Ranger, 4.0/automatic 4X2/81,000 miles) what are some of the more common ones?
This had happened afew years before and no hard code could be found, eventually the light went out on it`s own.
Seems the best thing to do would be to take it back in and retested......

Just go to autozone and "rent" a code puller from them. You buy it, use it in the parking lot, then return it from them. Then go online and check the code. Its impossible to start guessing what it could be
I think that many of the places will pull the codes for you. However the cost of scanners have come down a lot in recent years for a basic model that you could use at home in the driveway and then check the code #. That way you can also go online and see what opinions there are on what the code might actually be getting set for.
go to checkers. they check it for free and tell you what to do to fix it. I had a problem a couple months back with it coming on all the time. even a bad gas cap will make it come on

We have no Checkers ( I take it that it`s a parts supply store?) here but do have other similar parts outlets.
About 4 years ago when a code couldn`t be found we were told that a loose or bad gas cap could produce a cel.
