460 internal or external?

Someone told me that all stock 460s are internally balanced. Are they? I find that hard to believe, since stock they really are not set up for 7000 RPM. I would see no need for it but I could be wrong..

just a litttle bit of reference, internal or external balance doesn't make it a 7000rpm motor either way, there is plenty of guys with external balanced setup turing 8000rpm plus, and there is a lot of internal balanced factory engines that never were meant to turn more then 5000. some of the Nascar teams have even played with externally balancing engines, don't remember the reason that it was actually better but remember reading how it does work for them. Only thing I can recall at all was smaller counter weights meaning less windage, adn lighter overall rotating assembly but it's been a while since I read that article.

I was looking at Jonkaaseracingengines.com at the new P51 big block heads, theres an article how they took a stock bottom end 460 factory rods, crank, forged pistons,a pretty radical cam in it and the P51s and at 6800RPM it made 690Hp and 650Ftlbs. I am building a 514 with a scat crank and DSS racing main support and Forged Hbeams and pistons and plan on turning 7000. the reason i was wondering is that I have a PAW 460 I bought a few years ago. If I can use the harmonic balancer off of that for my 514 ( which is internal) does the balancer say if its a neutral balance on it??

The balancers are the same. The spacer behind the balancer is different between internal and external. Kasse is still using that same engine testing his new Boss 429 heads. He did put a new set of rods in it.If I remember right they were making around 800HP with them.

actually last I heard he was over 900hp with that engine with the new boss prototype heads on it with pump gas at 7000rpm. He did put in new rods though, and it is a ford 514 crate engine as a base, and was the engine he has used as a test mule for years, including when he developed the SCJ heads for ford adn when he did the P51 heads out now. The pistons have like 8 sets of valve reliefs in them.

Here is the dyno sheet for that motor with the new boss heads
