When I put my automatic transmission down into first, it seems like that should be the lowest gear and it should have a lot more torque than it does. I try to take off and it is fairly sluggish although it does take off better than if I start out with it in second. Now when I am taking off in first manually and then push it up into Drive, it gets a lot more power, almost as if it downshifts when it seems like it should already be in first when i push it up into Drive.
I'm also wondering if this is goign to affect my 4x4 Low since usually people put there vehicles in first and 4x4 Low and have low gearing.
It wouldn't surprise me if it's the PCM changing the calibration of the throttle to prevent tearing the driveline up in first gear. It definitely does that in 4wd low. It feels like you about have to put it to the floor to get it to move compared to 2wd.

Anyone else having this problem?
it's not a problem
Ford has the PCM remap the throttle curve when you put the truck into 2nd or 1st gear. when in 1/2 gears, you have to give the truck alot more throttle just to get the same amount of acceleration. all the HP is still there, it's just more precisely metered vs. the truck being in Drive
they did this to give you more wheel control when towing (boat ramp, muddy yard) at low speeds. also, as VFR said, the throttle gets remapped when in 4x4lo. again, it's to give you more precise throttle control at low speeds offroad.
That answers my question. Thanks. I never really kept it in First gear long enough to realize that the power is still there. I just knew that I had to give it a lot of gas so I was assuming it was actually a higher gear than 1st.
